Jingbirok (A Record of Rebuke and Admonition)懲毖錄

Ryu Seong-ryong · 1633 (printed; written after the Imjin War) · Korea · 310 entries · 168,372 Chinese characters

A record left by Ryu Seong-ryong, Chief State Councillor, of what he saw with his own eyes after the Imjin War ended. Its title comes from the line, "I rebuke what is past, and take heed against troubles to come." He set down without excuse how the war began and what the court failed to do. His recommendation of Yi Sun-sin, the wrangling with the Ming army, and the suffering the people endured are all recorded as they were.

The preface, volumes 1 to 16, and the Nokhu Miscellany — 310 entries — have been translated. The one place in volumes 3 and 4 that carries only a title and the words 「it is contained in the main collection」 is left as the source text has it. The names of Japanese people, the Japanese place names and the wording 「our country」 follow the president's twenty-fifth decision, of 2026-09-27 — the Jingbirok is writing in which the author set down what he saw with his own eyes, so 「our」 was kept.
