Jingbirok (A Record of Rebuke and Admonition) Book 5 — The Geunpok Collection A record left by Ryu Seong-ryong, Chief State Councillor, of what he saw with his own eyes after the Imjin War ended. Its title comes from the line, "I rebuke what is past, and take heed against troubles to come." He set down without excuse how the war began and what the court failed to do. His recommendation of Yi Sun-sin, the wrangling with the Ming army, and the suffering the people endured are all recorded as they were.

The Ming troops were stationed apart at Gyeongju, Daegu and Samga, barring the enemy on three routes. Now the troops at the two places, Gyeongju and Samga, have already withdrawn, and only Commander Liu's troops at Daegu remain; these too will withdraw together before long, so that the situation is urgent in the extreme. Looking at the dispatch Commander Liu sent yesterday to Kim Myeong-won (金命元), he said that our troops should hold the three camps in their place, from which his mind to withdraw may be known.

At Samga (三嘉) there are already a mountain fortress and the camp where the Ming commander was stationed, so a place of such a lie as can be held should be picked out and held by the several commanders stationed at Uiryeong. At Daegu the Commander-in-Chief should be stationed, leading Defense Commander Kim Eung-seo (金應瑞); and Gyeongju should be held by Go Eon-baek (高彥伯), Gwon Eung-su (權應銖), Hong Gye-nam (洪季男), Jeong Hui-hyeon (鄭希玄), Pak Ui-jang (朴毅長), Kim Tae-heo (金太虛) and the rest. Let the three places link their positions to one another, calling together choice and nimble troops and having them all go forward into camp, and let army grain be provided and kept coming without want, so as to make it a plan for holding at all costs. If the enemy's movements turn somewhere, it is for the Commander-in-Chief to answer with a plan according to where the urgency lies.
