Jingbirok (A Record of Rebuke and Admonition) Book 5 — The Geunpok Collection A record left by Ryu Seong-ryong, Chief State Councillor, of what he saw with his own eyes after the Imjin War ended. Its title comes from the line, "I rebuke what is past, and take heed against troubles to come." He set down without excuse how the war began and what the court failed to do. His recommendation of Yi Sun-sin, the wrangling with the Ming army, and the suffering the people endured are all recorded as they were.

By your servant's report in days past, Your Majesty has already granted that, once the military business of the several provinces should have come a little into order, an aide be sent ahead to charge them and to inspect them.

The aide Han Jun-gyeom (韓浚謙) will now be sent to Hwanghae, Pyeongan and those provinces, to charge the soldiers and muster the army grain, to look into how well or ill their officials do, and to ask after the ills and troubles of the people within the provinces and other matters of profit and harm that ought to be dropped or carried out; and, going about in secret from time to time, to report item by item what he has seen and heard, on the strength of which he shall pass it on in a report.

It would be fitting that one seal (印信) be given him for use on his travels, and that of the magistrates within the provinces he decide of himself, as to those below the hall, in cases of sixty strokes and under, following the dispatch of the Supreme Commander of the four provinces below, and report those magistrates of the hall before acting; wherefore we venture to report.
