Jingbirok (A Record of Rebuke and Admonition) Book 6 — The Record of Jinsa A record left by Ryu Seong-ryong, Chief State Councillor, of what he saw with his own eyes after the Imjin War ended. Its title comes from the line, "I rebuke what is past, and take heed against troubles to come." He set down without excuse how the war began and what the court failed to do. His recommendation of Yi Sun-sin, the wrangling with the Ming army, and the suffering the people endured are all recorded as they were.

On the eleventh day of this month your servant respectfully received at Jeongju (定州) the royal directive bearing the seal of the deputy royal secretary (右副承旨).

The native troops along the river and the picked soldiers raised and sent up by the several districts are already at Anju (安州), the greater part of them led by the governor Yi Wonik (李元翼) and the army commander Yi Bin (李薲). Only the commander-in-chief Kim Myeongwon (金命元) is here, waiting for the Ming generals. The Ming troops came to this place from Imban (林畔) at the hour of the serpent today, and mean to set out for Gasan (嘉山) at dawn tomorrow.

The boat bridges on the two rivers, pressed on with the utmost strictness, are now wholly made. Only of the bringing of the three districts' storehouse grain round to Anju there is as yet no reply, and, being a matter of the sea road, your servant fears it may be hard to come in time. Hong Segong (洪世恭), the provisioning commissioner, happening to arrive only yesterday, your servant sent Hong Segong on ahead to Anju to press it on. Other matters touching military affairs he plans to take counsel upon with Kim Myeongwon and dispose of.

The gum swelling from which your servant suffers has grown worse these few days, so that he cannot move his body. He means to wait for it to abate a little and then go forward to Gasan, but it is hard to fix a time beforehand; and fearing that he may spoil a great matter, he cannot master his anxiety.
