Jingbirok (A Record of Rebuke and Admonition) Book 8 — The Record of Jinsa A record left by Ryu Seong-ryong, Chief State Councillor, of what he saw with his own eyes after the Imjin War ended. Its title comes from the line, "I rebuke what is past, and take heed against troubles to come." He set down without excuse how the war began and what the court failed to do. His recommendation of Yi Sun-sin, the wrangling with the Ming army, and the suffering the people endured are all recorded as they were.

Your servant had his aide-de-camp Sin Gyeongjin (辛慶晉) go to where Kim Eungseo (金應瑞), Defense Commander of the Left, has pitched camp, and to the camps of the several districts, to stroke and comfort the hearts of the troops. The troops everywhere all say that the grades of war merit for the several engagements of former days have already been reported by the Supreme Commander, but that they do not know how they were settled; and there are even those who submit letters together to plead. The sorting and grading of so much war merit is not a thing to be done of a sudden, and the office in charge will surely carry it out in order; yet the hearts of the troops being thus, there is no little chafing and anxious waiting among them. Let the court carry it out with particular haste, show them that reward does not pass its season, and so encourage the hearts of the troops.

Yi Eunghae (李應獬), formerly Assistant Magistrate of Pyongyang, for his offence followed the army in plain clothes and had charge of one camp; afterward he gained war merit several times and has no small name for fighting with all his strength. When the retreat and flight came, he stayed behind alone to hold the rear, and by this many soldiers came through alive and whole. Last month the people of Pyongyang Prefecture came to your servant and pleaded, asking that Eunghae be made Assistant Magistrate of that prefecture and set over its military affairs. At that time his offence was not long past, and your servant did not know what manner of man Eunghae was, and so did not dare report it lightly. Now the hearts of the people are thus, and the merit he has won is also well worth recording, so that to carry it out as the people wish might perhaps do no harm. Yet the matter hangs on royal favour, and your servant only reports what he has heard.
