Receiving Orders, on Sowing Division among the Enemy有。旨祗受後仍論行間以離賊黨事宜狀
本月初九日同副承旨成貼有。旨書狀臣在東坡祗受昨日申時舟師將金千鎰等又送。王子書二道及別錄一紙故監封上送別錄則似是黃赫所書而淸平兩賊互相猜阻此亦行間以離其黨之時適沈遊擊於昨日午時自開城府馳來臣已略書多爲之間以離其黨之意以送而沈略見查將于其幕怱怱過去故不得相見問其意思如何大抵自古夷狄最爲無厭豈有和好得成之理况我與此賊有不共戴天之讎雖死而豈可與之講解臣又觀賊謀甚爲難測數日來散出搶掠未已不無欲以此故緩我師與。天兵而益逞兇毒之計臣日夜焦心而制在。天將末如之何今此有。旨辭緣詳審奉行後更爲馳。啓計料
On the ninth day of this month your servant received at Dongpa the written directive, stamped with the seal and sent down by the Third Deputy Royal Secretary.
Yesterday at the hour of the monkey Kim Cheonil (金千鎰), commander of the naval forces, and the rest sent in two more letters of the princes and one separate record, which are sealed and sent up. The separate record appears to have been written by Hwang Hyeok (黃赫); it says that the two enemy commanders Kiyomasa (淸正) and Yukinaga (行長) are jealous of one another and at odds, and this too is a time to widen the breach and divide their company.
As it happened, Brigade Commander Shen (沈遊擊) came riding from Gaeseong Prefecture yesterday at the hour of the horse. Your servant had already written a rough letter and sent word of his view that the breach should be widened much and their company divided. But Brigade Commander Shen saw General Zha (査將) only for a moment at his tent and passed on in haste, and so your servant could not meet him and ask what he thinks of it.
On the whole, from ancient times it is the barbarian who most of all knows no satisfaction; how then should there be any way for peace to be made? Much more, since this enemy is to us a foe with whom we cannot live under one heaven, how should we come to terms with them though we die for it?
Your servant sees further that the enemy's designs are very hard to fathom: within these few days they have been spreading out and plundering without cease. There is in this no lack of purpose to slacken our troops and the Ming troops and so to work their cruel and venomous designs the more. Your servant frets day and night, but the decision rests with the Ming general, and nothing can be done.
The matters in this directive your servant will examine in detail and carry out, and will then report again in haste.
