Jingbirok (A Record of Rebuke and Admonition) Book 11 — The Record of Jinsa A record left by Ryu Seong-ryong, Chief State Councillor, of what he saw with his own eyes after the Imjin War ended. Its title comes from the line, "I rebuke what is past, and take heed against troubles to come." He set down without excuse how the war began and what the court failed to do. His recommendation of Yi Sun-sin, the wrangling with the Ming army, and the suffering the people endured are all recorded as they were.

Since the troubles arose, the district schools of every town have all been burnt in the fighting, so that the Sacred Shrines (聖廟) have become one rank waste of grass, and in very many places the spirit tablets (位版) have been washed away and lost, with none knowing where they are. The spirit tablets of the Sacred Shrine of Suwon Prefecture were, when the troubles first arose, taken for safety to a private house in Ssangbu County (雙阜縣) within that town's land; but the incense has ceased and there is no one to guard them, which is sorely painful to the heart.

This being a time when funds are quite spent, a school instructor (訓導) cannot be sent out; but let one of the scholars near that town who has discernment be given provisionally the name of professor (敎授) or instructor and be charged solely with the guarding of the Sacred Shrine, and let him take the scholars of that town with him and from time to time look to it and sweep it, waiting until matters are settled. If the places in other towns where spirit tablets remain be dealt with likewise in accordance with this, then the Sacred Shrines will not come to be without any support, and the hearts of the men of that region will be somewhat comforted as well. Your servant asks that the office concerned be made to deliberate and deal with it in haste.
