Urgent Report on Service in Battle
Your servant's military officer Han Sarip (韓士立) led some fifteen soldiers of Ongmak at Seogang, Yi Cheonbok (李千福) and the rest, and went to spy out the place of the enemy camp at Yongsan, meaning to lay a plan to strike with fire under cover of night; and they had already learned the whole lie of it, but since Brigade Commander Shen (沈遊擊) and the rest were just then in that place they dared not set a hand to it.
On the fourteenth day of this month Yi Cheonbok and the rest met the enemy at Oeseongsan, cut off one head, and shot some fifteen men dead. On the fifteenth day they fought at Oeseongsan again, and Han Sarip and the rest cut off one head and shot nine men dead. On the seventeenth day they met the enemy at Oeseongsan again; the enemy soldiers were more than two hundred and our troops were fourteen men, but they rushed in and shot in all directions, and the enemy fled and scattered. Yi Cheonbok and the rest shot some fifteen more dead, and besides these there were very many who were struck by arrows.
Of late there is none among our troops who does not rouse himself and think of being foremost in striking the enemy, and the enemy's spirit too has waned, so that at the mere sight of us they flee. But the Ming commanders come and go forbidding and binding, so that the enemy soldiers do not come out and our troops in turn dare not draw near below the walls and fight; and they have only been waiting for the day the Ming troops enter the walls, to repay some little of an enmity that reaches to heaven.
How should we have thought that the Ming commanders would in the end make peace with this enemy and hold our troops down so that they could not repay the enmity? That on the seventeenth day Zhou Hongmo (周弘謨) and the rest seized Seong Yeong (成泳) and took him into the camp and examined who it was that had taken Wa, was in truth because of Han Sarip and the rest fighting at Oeseongsan.
Our country, few and weak in military strength, could not rouse itself of itself, and in seeking to lean upon the Ming troops has come at last to this pass. In anger and pain we would die, yet there is nothing to be done.
