At the first, before your servant fell ill, about the time the Ming troops entered the capital, he charged the several commanders thus: Go Eonbaek (高彥伯), Yi Sieon (李時言), and Kim Eungseo (金應瑞) and the rest were to cross the river by the eastern road and join force with Byeon Eungseong (邊應星), magistrate of Icheon, and pursue and strike; and Yi Bin (李薲) and Gwon Yul (權慄), governor of Jeolla, and the rest were to cross the river by the western road and unite strength with Seon Geoi (宣居怡), army commander of Jeolla, and with the royal troops and righteous troops of the left circuit of Gyeonggi, and pursue and strike. Word was passed on besides to Chungcheong and Gyeongsang and the other provinces to hold their troops in order and pursue and strike as one.
Beyond all expectation the Ming commander Zha Dashou (査大受) and those below him each led their troops and stood in a line south of the Han River, and wherever they saw a man carrying bow and arrows with the look of meaning to take the enemy they at once bound him and beat him at will. Yi Chung (李忠), a court assessor and your servant's military officer, led a band apart and cut off five heads of the enemy at Naedong village in the land of Juksan; but he came within sight of Zha Dashou's troops, and the heads he had cut off were barely hidden away, and Yi Chung was beaten by Zha Dashou and all but grievously hurt. Hong Gyenam (洪季男), the auxiliary commander, too was hurt by Zha Dashou's troops and was made to go about in their train, so that he could not take the enemy as he would. Yi Bin and those below him were all held fast, and only Yi Sieon, Jeong Huihyeon (鄭希玄), and Byeon Eungseong and the rest took byways and escaped their eyes, and struck and cut down the Wa who were fleeing back.
Our country's military strength is truly few and weak, and the Ming troops blocked the road midway besides, so that commanders and soldiers alike lost all their spirit while the enemy soldiers withdrew and went back as they pleased; and there is no pain and anger worse than this. Your servant's illness was made the heavier by this care and anger, and yet there was nothing to be done.
Now the commander-in-chief Kim Myeongwon (金命元) has already gone down south with the Ming commanders, and your servant, his illness being heavy, is left behind and disposes of nothing. Receiving the sovereign's charge while he lies upon his pillow and dies, he cannot master the oppression and pain that would break him. He has at once sent the words within the charge handed down to him over in haste to the commander-in-chief by official paper.
