Urgent Report: The Supreme Commander Has Come, and I Set Out at Once
I had already drawn up this report and had not yet sent it off when my officer Yi Yusaeng (李惟生) returned from where Regional Commander Liu is. The Commander's reply said, "From the report that has come I see that the Japanese intent cannot be fathomed, and our guard should be made strict. I have now sent out two companies to go ahead to Daegu and hold it in camp, and tomorrow morning I shall lead the main body and go with them."
Earlier, when I was on the road at Gunwi and heard that Ulsan and Gyeongju were in peril, I at once sent a statement (稟帖) to Regional Commander Liu asking him to move his troops quickly to their relief, and the Commander happily consented at once. If the enemy hear of it, there is hope they will shrink back in fear and withdraw of themselves. Further, by what Yi Yusaeng reported by word of mouth, Supreme Commander Gwon Yul (權慄) has also reached Hapcheon, so the business of answering the enemy will settle itself.
It is long since I received the summons, and to be delayed like this still leaves me deeply abashed; I shall set out at once. After a grave illness I pressed on through the heat and did not keep measure in my drinking, and dysentery has come of it. My strength is gone, and I am carried along a step at a time with men holding me up, so that I fear I cannot keep to a reckoning of days upon the road, and I am the more abashed.
