Your servant, while at Andong pressing forward the carrying of the army grain, has today hurried to Yeongcheon (永川) and is about to head for Angang.
In what Yi Deokhyeong (李德馨), the officer attending the Superintendent, hurried to pass on, it was said: "The Superintendent set out for Ulsan at the fifth watch of that day, and as he was setting out he called Deokhyeong and said, 'The army grain is not supplied in time; Joseon has neither discipline nor rule, and lets a great business be spoiled. Why does the King not deal with the ministers who spoil the work by the law of the realm? Let both Yun Seunghun (尹承勳) and Seong Yeong (成泳) be called to this road to press the carrying, and let Yu Yeonggyeong (柳永慶) remain and hold the main camp. On my return I shall come by the Yangsan, Miryang and Daegu road. Let Yu Seongnyong go at once to Daegu and those parts and press the making ready of grain.'"
Angang lies forty li from Gyeongju, and the straight road from Yeongcheon toward Gyeongju passes through it. Therefore at the outset Yun Seunghun and the others had all the grain of each district carried in there, and the grain for Regional Commander Wu was all issued at Angang. But because the Commander-in-Chief's troops took a side road and headed straight for Gyeongju, the grain at Angang had to be moved and carried to Gyeongju all of a sudden, and the business was most abrupt. What is spoken of as not being supplied in time is for this reason.
Further, as for the army grain already carried out from Daegu and those parts: because the several armies have all gathered at Gyeongju, the old and the weak, the men and the women are all being turned out and are moving and carrying it in ruin; and now there is this order besides. Yangsan and Miryang have become the enemy's very lair and their people are all scattered; and though there were grain in the neighboring districts, by whose strength would it be carried in? And how, besides, should much grain be got even from the neighboring districts? It is utterly distressing and urgent.
Your servant was not from the first the official in charge of the army grain, and he has besides only now arrived; so that of all the greater and lesser amounts of grain carried and of the moving of it this way and that he has not examined the beginning and the end. Yet the order is as it is, and not knowing the thread of it he can do nothing. He means to turn from Yeongcheon toward Daegu and carry the grain, but he does not know how what lies ahead will go, and cannot master his cares.
