Jingbirok (A Record of Rebuke and Admonition) Book 16 — The Military Headquarters Register A record left by Ryu Seong-ryong, Chief State Councillor, of what he saw with his own eyes after the Imjin War ended. Its title comes from the line, "I rebuke what is past, and take heed against troubles to come." He set down without excuse how the war began and what the court failed to do. His recommendation of Yi Sun-sin, the wrangling with the Ming army, and the suffering the people endured are all recorded as they were.
Carry out still more fully and in detail what was ordered the other day, the blocking of the fords along the river and the like.
To range and raise walls for the firing of guns all at once is a thing hard to do as matters stand. But if each soldier is made to provide two empty sacks, and when the time comes the order is passed that at every ford earth be put in them and they be piled up on the bank to make a shooting house, and the troops hide their bodies there to loose arrows and fire guns, the thing is very handy and fitting. Examine this, carry it out, and then report.
Interlinear notes 2
The base text has 沿江一滯, but this is taken as an error for 一帶.
An empty sack is a straw sack that has not yet been filled with grain. The order is to fill these with earth and pile them up to make cover for the body.
