The Kumo Xi
1The Kumo Xi
The Kumo Xi are a separate branch of the Xianbei. Their forebears were broken by Murong Huang and hid away in the region of Songmo. Later their kinds grew many and they divided into five tribes. The first is Ruhezhu, the second Mohefu, the third Qige, the fourth Mukun, the fifth Shide. Each tribe sets up one siqin (俟斤). There was one of the Ahui clan (阿會氏), the boldest of their chiefs, and all five tribes take their orders from him. They are held in service by the Tujue, and they have often attacked the Khitan. Goods and livestock taken in raids are what they give out as rewards. The dead they wrap in reed matting and hang upon a tree. In the fifth year of Datong they sent an envoy and presented the products of their land.
Interlinear notes 2
The character in the base text is 斥.
On "each tribe sets up one siqin," where the text has 斥 for 斤: Zhang Senkai said, "The other accounts all write 俟斤, so the character 斥 appears to be an error." The Tongdian, in the section on Kumo Xi, the Cefu yuangui, and the Yulan all write 俟斤, and the text has been corrected to follow them.
