Chinggis said again to Jurchedei, "Your kindness to me was a weighty one. In the land of Khalakhaljid Eled, when we fought Ong Khan and I was in the midst of my trouble, it was Khuildar who first said he would fight, yet the one who brought the thing about was truly you. You struck back the main strength of the Jirgin and the rest, and drove straight to the gate of Heaven and the door of their center, and you shot Senggum in the cheek. Had you not hit Senggum then, who knows how it would have gone? That was your weighty and great service. Afterward, when we set out along the Khalkha River, I looked on you as on a high mountain that shelters a man. And when we went to strike Ong Khan by the lake of Baljuna, you were the forward scout, and because Heaven helped us the chief land of the Kereit was brought to peace. For that reason the Naiman and the Merkit peoples could not stand in line against us, and they broke and scattered. At first, when the Naiman and the Merkit broke and scattered, Jakha Gambu offered his two daughters and so kept his people whole, and afterward he turned against us again, and you used a plan and seized him, and only then were his people taken. That was your second service." Then he gave the lady Ibakha to Jurchedei. Chinggis said to Ibakha, "It is not that I dislike you for want of conduct or want of beauty, nor have I ever said that your body is unclean and that you should not be counted in the order of my ladies. It is because Jurchedei gave up his life in battle and was able to gather in the people who had parted from us that I give you to him for his service. Let the children who sit in my seat hereafter think of the right of this service, and let the seat of Ibakha not be broken off, down to children and their children." He said again to Ibakha, "Your father Jakha Gambu sent two hundred men with you when you were married, with the cook Ashikh Temur and others among them. Now, when you go, leave a hundred of them, Ashikh Temur and the rest, for a keepsake." And he said to Jurchedei, "There are four thousand of the Uruud people. Rule them."

Chinggis said again to Khubilai, "You bent the hard men who would not bend. You and Jelme and Jebe and Subeetei, the four of you, are like fierce dogs. Wherever I sent you, you broke hard stone, and burst through cliffs, and cut across deep water. For that reason, when there was fighting, I made you four the vanguard. Boorchu and Mukhali and Boroul and Chilaun, the four men of valor, I had follow me, and Jurchedei and Khuildar I had stand before me, and my heart was at ease. Now, in all the affairs of the troops and horses, you, Khubilai, shall be the elder. And because Beduun is crooked in temper you blamed him and did not make him a commander of a thousand. Make him a commander of a thousand together with you, and let him take counsel with you in what he does, and let us see how he turns out hereafter."

Chinggis said again to Boorchu and Mukhali and the rest, "This Khunan was a he-wolf by night and a black crow by day, and he followed me and never chose to follow bad men. In all things, take counsel with these two, Khunan and Kokochos, in what you do. My son Jochi is the eldest, so let Khunan lead for him, and let the Geniges be a command of ten thousand under Jochi." He said also, "Khunan and Kokochos and Degei and Usun the elder, these four, have never hidden anything they heard or saw, but came and told it to me."

Chinggis said again to Jelme, "Your father, old Jarchiudai, came from Mount Burkhan with the bellows on his back, and when I was born in the land of Deliun Boldakh on the Onon River he gave a sable wrapping cloth. At that time Jelme was still in swaddling clothes, and from then it was settled that he should be a servant of my own household, and we grew up together and have been companions until now. Your service has been great, and you are the companion who brings me fortune. Let him not be punished for nine offenses."

Chinggis said again to Tolun, "How is it that you and your father each came to rule a thousand? It was because you helped your father gather in the people, and for that I gave you the name of cherbi. Now make a command of a thousand out of the people you gathered yourself, and take counsel with Tolukhan in what you do."

Chinggis said again to the cook Onggur, the son of Menggetu Kiyan, "In the past you, with the three houses of the Tokhurauud and the five houses of the Tarkhud and the two branches of the Changshiud and the Bayaud, made one circle with me. In the dark mist you did not lose the way, and in the confusion you did not leave me, and in the cold and the wet you bore it with me. Now, what reward do you want?" Onggur said, "If I may choose my reward, my brothers of the Bayaud house are scattered among the tribes, and I would gather them in." Chinggis granted it and said, "Gather them in and rule them as a command of a thousand." He said also, "You two, Onggur and Boroul, divided to left and right and served out the food evenly, and put my heart at ease. Now you two shall ride out and serve the food where many men are. When we sit, you two shall divide to left and right at the great drinking, and sit facing north with Tolun and the rest, and see to the food."

Chinggis said again to Boroul, "My mother picked up you and Shigi Khutukhu and Kuchu and Kokochu, the four of you, in the camping grounds, and made you her sons, and reared you and led you until you were grown, wishing you to be companions to our sons. How much have you repaid the kindness of my mother in rearing you? Boroul was my companion, and in every hard battle, even on a night of rain, when we stood against the enemy, he never let the soup and the food fall short, and never left me to sleep with an empty belly. Again, when the Tatars were wiped out, Khargil Shira escaped, and having nothing to eat he came back to my mother's house. He said he was looking for clothing and food, and my mother said, 'If you are looking for clothing and food, sit over there.' While he sat behind the western door, Tolui, who was then five years old, came in at the door and was going out again, and Khargil took him under his arm and carried him out and drew a knife with his hand. My mother cried out, 'My child is lost.' At that time Altani, the wife of Boroul, was sitting on the eastern side, and she ran out at once and caught the man by the hair, and seized the hand that had drawn the knife, and the knife fell. Just then Jedei and Jelme, the two of them, were killing an ox on the north side of the house, and when they heard Altani cry out they took knife and axe and went there and killed the man. Afterward Altani and Jedei and Jelme, the three of them, contended for the first service. Jedei and Jelme said, 'If we had not come quickly, what could you, a woman alone, have done to him? Tolui would already have been harmed.' Altani said, 'If you had not heard my voice, how would you have come at all? And if I had not caught him by the hair and made his knife fall, Tolui would already have been harmed before you came.' Reckoned in this way, Altani won the first service." He said also, "In the land of Khalakhaljid, when we fought Ong Khan, Ogodei was struck in the neck by an arrow, and Boroul sucked out the clotted blood and saved the life of Ogodei. He repaid the kindness of my mother in rearing him, and saved the lives of my two sons. In every hard place he was never slack. From this day let him not be punished for nine offenses."

Chinggis said again, "Let us give rewards to the women as well."

Chinggis said again to old Usun, "These four, Usun and Khunan and Kokochos and Degei, never hid what they heard and saw and what came into their minds, but told me all of it. Now in the usage of the Dadan the office of beki is held to be weighty. Usun, you are of the line that is eldest among the Baarin, and you may be the beki. When you are made beki, ride a white horse and wear white clothes and sit above all the others. Choose a good year and month, take counsel, and let him be held in honor."

Chinggis said again, "Khuildar my anda has the service that in the fighting of old he was the first to open his mouth and say he would fight. Let his children receive the reward that is given to those left alone."

Chinggis said again to Narin Tooril, the son of Chagan Goa, "Your father was careful in my presence. He fought in the land of Dalan Baljud and was killed by Jamukha. Now do you receive the reward that is given to those left alone." Tooril said, "My brothers of the Negus are scattered among the tribes, and I would gather them in." Chinggis allowed him to gather them in, and had his children and their children rule them in turn.

Taizu said again to Sorkhan Shira, "When I was small and the brothers Targutai Kiriltug of the Taichiud people seized me, you and your sons hid me and had the girl Khadaan wait on me, and you let me go. That kindness of yours I have thought of day and night in my heart. Yet you were late in coming away from the Taichiud, and so I reward you only now. What reward do you want?" Sorkhan Shira and his sons said, "We would camp as we please in the land of the Selengge, which was the Merkit's. What else you would give us, let the emperor judge." Chinggis said, "As you say, camp as you please in that land. And I grant your children and their children to bear bow and arrows and to be given the cup, and they shall not be punished for nine offenses." He said also to his sons Chilaun and Chimbai, "How should I forget the words you two spoke in the past? When anything you lack comes into your minds, come and ask for it yourselves." And he said, "Sorkhan Shira and Badai and Kishilik, do as you please. Take for yourselves all the goods you win in the field and all the wild beasts you take in the ring hunt. Sorkhan Shira was once a household man of Todoge of the Taichiud people, and Badai and Kishilik were herders of the horses of Yeke Cheren. Now let them lean on me and live in gladness."

Chinggis said again to Nayaa, "At the first, when you and your father were bringing Targutai Kiriltug in, you said, 'How can a man cast off his own master and carry him away?' and you let him go there and came over to me. For that reason I said, 'This man knows the great right of things, and hereafter a charge may be laid on him.' Now Boorchu has become the commander of ten thousand of the right hand, and Mukhali the king the commander of ten thousand of the left hand, and you shall be the commander of ten thousand of the center."

He said again to Jebe and Subeetei, the two of them, "Rule the people you gathered in yourselves, and make them each a command of a thousand."

Again he had Degei, who had herded the sheep, gather in the people who had no household register and make them a command of a thousand.

Again, when the people were divided and given in charge, the carpenter Kuchugur was given too few people, so some were drawn from the people under the several officers, and he was set to rule a command of a thousand together with Mulkhalkhu of the Jadaran people.

All those among the men who founded the state together who were fit to be commanders of ten thousand, of a thousand, and of a hundred were given their charges and rewarded. Chinggis said, "In the past I had only eighty men as night guards and seventy men as day guards. Now Heaven has commanded that all the people belong to my rule, and I shall choose ten thousand men from within the several commands of ten thousand, of a thousand, and of a hundred to be my day guards and the rest. In choosing them, pick out from among the sons of the officers and of the common men those who have skill and a strong body, and have them come before me. The son of a commander of a thousand shall bring one younger brother and ten companions. The son of a commander of a hundred shall bring one younger brother and five companions. The son of a squad leader or of a common man shall bring one younger brother and three companions. The horses to be used by the son of a commander of a thousand and his ten companions shall be levied within his own commands of a thousand and of a hundred and made ready for him. In giving them, set aside the household goods his father divided out to him and the goods and people he got for himself, and give according to the rule first laid down. The horses for the son of a commander of a hundred and his five companions, and for the son of a squad leader or a common man and his three companions, shall be given by the same rule as before. If many among the commanders of a thousand and of a hundred and the squad leaders break this, they shall be charged with the offense and rebuked. If any man avoids his turn of night guard and does not come, another shall be chosen in his place and that man sent to a far country. If any man wishes to fill a place himself, let no one hinder him."
