Yuanchao Bishi (The Secret History of the Mongols) Complete in one volume "In the beginning the ancestor of the people of the Yuan was a blue-grey wolf born of Heaven" — the oldest book the Mongols set down in their own hand. It begins with Temujin left fatherless at nine and cast out, carries him through the night in the Onon with only his face above the water, through the cart of wool that hid him and saved his life, and on to the raising of the nine-legged white standard. Hoelun baring both her breasts to rebuke her sons, Jamukha laying out his "four dogs," the men who beg to be killed without their blood being shed — these are the voices the official histories struck out. It stands as the companion piece to the Account of Goryeo in the History of Yuan.

1The night guards are raised to a thousand

Then the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, following the words of Chinggis, chose out men and brought them. The eighty who had been night guards before were raised to eight hundred, and Chinggis had them raised to a thousand, and ordered Yeke Neurin to be the head commander of a thousand over them. The four hundred who had carried bow and arrow before were from the first put in the charge of Jelme and Yesun Tee and Bugidai together. When the day guards and the men who carried bow and arrow came on duty, they were divided into four shifts. One shift had Yesun Tee for its head, one shift had Bugidai for its head, one shift had Khorkhudakh for its head, and one shift had Lablakha for its head. Now they were raised to a thousand, and Yesun Tee was made their head.

2The guard is made ten thousand and named the great center army

Before this, Ogele Cherbi, a kinsman of Boorchu, had charge of the day guards of the guard, and now they were raised to a thousand and he still had charge of them. One thousand was put in the charge of Bukha, a kinsman of Mukhali. One thousand was put in the charge of Alchidai, a kinsman of Ilugai. One thousand was put in the charge of Dodai Cherbi. One thousand was put in the charge of Dokholkhu. One thousand was put in the charge of Chanai, a kinsman of Jurchedei. One thousand was put in the charge of Akhutai, a kinsman of Alchi. And one thousand of chosen brave men was put in the charge of Arkhai Khasar. In ordinary times they were only day guards, but when the army went out to fight they were to be the brave men in front. From among the commanders of thousands there were chosen eight thousand night guards, and with the two thousand who carried bow and arrow the guard came to ten thousand in all. Chinggis said, "Let these men who are my guard be made hereafter the great center army."

3The guard is divided into four shifts and the penalties are set

Chinggis said again, "Divide the guard into four shifts. Let Bukha have charge of one shift, Alchidai of one shift, Dodai Cherbi of one shift, and Dokholkhu of one shift." He gave the charge to the four heads and made known the order of the shifts, saying, "When a shift comes on, the palace man who is its head is to lead the day guards of the escort and sleep there, changing over once in three nights. If a man who ought to come on duty does not come, give him thirty strokes. If a second time he does not come, give him seventy. If a third time he does not come and has no cause, give him thirty-seven strokes and send him in exile to a far place. The officers who have charge of the guard are to repeat these words once each time the shifts change over. If they do not repeat them, the fault is with those who hold the charge. If they have repeated them and a man still breaks the command, punish him by the rule laid down before. The officers who have charge of the guard are not to punish the men under them of their own will without my word. Whenever a man has done wrong, it must be reported to me, and then let him who is to be beheaded be beheaded and him who is to be beaten be beaten. If anyone does not follow my word and beats a man under him with a rod, let him be beaten with a rod in the same way. If anyone strikes with the fist, let him be struck with the fist in the same way."

4The guard stands above the commanders of thousands outside

Chinggis said again, "My day guards of the guard stand above the commanders of thousands outside, and the household men of my day guards stand above the commanders of hundreds and the holders of tablets outside. If a commander of a thousand outside quarrels with a day guard of the guard as his equal, let the commander of a thousand outside be held at fault."

5Seize whoever goes about the palace at night

Chinggis said again to the officers of the shifts, "When the day guards who carry bow and arrow, and the cooks and the rest, come on duty, by day each is to attend to his own charge. When the sun goes down, those who carry bow and arrow are to hand over their bows and arrows, and the cooks their vessels, each to the night guards, and go outside to sleep. The next day, after the soup has been brought in, they are all to come back and take up their own charges as before. Anyone who goes to and fro about the palace, before it or behind it, after dark is to be seized by the night guards and questioned the next day. When the night guards change over, let a token be given so that they may enter. The night guards are to go round the palace at night and sleep guarding the door. If anyone comes in at night, break his head and cut through his shoulder. Anyone who comes to report an urgent matter is first to meet the night guards and to come with them behind the tent to report. Let no one walk or sit in the two spaces above where the night guards are. Let no one ask the number of the night guards, and from anyone who breaks this take away his saddle and his horse and his clothes. In the past Eljigidei, a man who could be relied on, passed by the place where the night guards were and was seized by them."

6Old night guards, great day guards, old braves, great bowmen

Chinggis said, "You night guards, on nights of great rain and snow, on clear nights, and on nights when the enemy fought in confusion, you kept guard around my tent and made my body and my mind wholly at ease. In no urgent matter were you ever slack, and by this I came to sit in the great seat. Now let my night guards, blessed and wholly true, be called the old night guards. Let the seventy day guards who come on duty under Ogele Cherbi be called the great day guards. Let the brave men of Arkhai be called the old braves. Let Yesun Tee and the others who carry bow and arrow be called the great bowmen."

7Hold them as what I have left behind me

"From among the ninety-five thousands I chose men and made them the close guard that I keep near my own body. In days to come let my sons and my grandsons think of this guard as what I have left behind me. Let them care for them well and not let them hold a grudge, but look on them as gods who bring good fortune."

8The household matters the night guards are to keep

Chinggis said again, "The cherbi officers within, and the herding of the beasts, are for the night guards to see to. The houses within, and the carts, and the standards, and the raw food and the cooked food, and the vessels and such things, are for the night guards to take charge of. If anything is lacking, ask him for it. Whenever clothing and food are shared out, do not share them out without the word of the night guards, and when they are shared out let it begin with him. The going in and out of people within is for the night guards to order. The doorkeepers are to stand close by the door, and the two men inside the door are to have charge of the wine. The man who keeps the camping ground is to be chosen from among the night guards. At the game drive they are to close the ring together, but half of them are to be left in front of the hunting carts."

9If I do not go out to fight, the night guards do not go

Chinggis said again, "If I do not go out to fight, let the night guards not go out to fight either. If anyone breaks this, the fault is with the head who raised the soldiers. The reason the night guards are not sent out to fight is only that they guard me always. At the game drive they follow me, and on ordinary days they have charge of gathering up the carts and the rest. Because this is no easy thing, I do not send them out to fight, lest the burden fall on them twice."

10Where each is to stand when camp is pitched

Taizu said again, "From among the night guards let men be chosen to judge matters together with Shigi Khutukhu. Let armor and bows and arrows and weapons and the like be gathered and shared out. From among the geldings of the government let the nets and the ropes for carrying loads be gathered. Let the night guards share out the silks together with the cherbi. Whenever camp is pitched, let the day guards who carry bow and arrow, and the men of Yesun Tee who carry bow and arrow, go on the right of the tent palace. Let Bukha and the other day guards go on the left of the tent palace. Let the braves of Arkhai go in front of the tent palace. Let the night guards, who have charge of the tents and the carts, go on the left and on the right before the tent palace. The day guards of the guard and the household people within are to be in the charge of Dodai Cherbi and to go always before the tent palace."

11Khubilai brings in the Kharlud

Taizu ordered Khubilai to attack the Kharlud clan. Their lord Arslan surrendered at once and came to see Taizu. Taizu gave him a daughter.

12Subeetei makes an end of the sons of Tokhtoa

Taizu ordered Subeetei also to pursue Khutu and Chilaun and the others, the sons of Tokhtoa. He pursued them as far as the Chui River, made an end of Khutu and the rest, and came back.

13Jebe makes an end of Khuchulug

At the first he had ordered Jebe to pursue Khuchulug. He pursued him as far as the land of Sarikh Khun, made an end of Khuchulug, and came back.

14The Iduud of the Uighur asks to be a fifth son

The Iduud, lord of the Uighur clan, sent Atkirakh and others as envoys to Chinggis to say, "When we heard the name of the Emperor, it was as when the clouds part and the sun is seen, as when the ice melts and the water is seen, and we were very glad. If you will grant us your favor, we wish to be a fifth son and to give our strength." Chinggis said, "Come. I will give you a daughter as well and let you be a fifth son." Then the Iduud came with gold and silver and pearls and silks and such things and saw Chinggis. And in the end he gave him the daughter named Al Altun.
