Volume Twelve
1Jochi brings in the people of the forest
In the year of the hare Chinggis ordered Jochi to lead the army of the right hand and go against the people of the forest, and had Bukha lead the way. Khuduka Beki of the Oirat clan came and submitted before the ten thousand Oirat, and so he led Jochi out against the ten thousand Oirat. When they entered the land of Shikhshid, the Oirat and the Tubas and the other branches all surrendered. When they came to the ten thousand of the Kirgis clan, their officers Yedi Inal and the rest submitted too, and came to see Jochi bringing white falcons and white geldings and black sables. From Shibir and the other branches southward, Jochi gathered in all the people of the forest. At last he led the commanders of ten thousand and of a thousand of the Kirgis, and the officers of the people of the forest, and came back with falcons and geldings and sables and the like to see Chinggis. Because Khuduka Beki of the Oirat clan had come and submitted first, Chinggis gave his daughter named Chechegen to Khuduka Beki's son Inalchi, and gave Jochi's daughter Khoraikhan to Inalchi's elder brother, and gave his daughter named Alakha to the Onggud clan. Then he said to Jochi, "Among my sons you are the eldest. Today you went out to fight for the first time, and without wearing out men and horses you have brought all those people of the forest to submit. I give you those people as your reward."
2Boroul is killed, and Dorbei Dokhshin attacks the Tumad
Again he ordered Boroul to attack the Khori Tumad clan. Their officer Daidukhul was already dead, and his wife Botokhai Tarkhun was ruling the people. When Boroul came there, he sent three men ahead of the great army. At nightfall, as they entered a narrow path in the deep forest, they did not notice that the lookouts of the enemy had come up behind and cut off the road, and Boroul was killed. Taizu heard of it and was greatly angered, and would have gone to fight in person, but Boorchu and Mukhali held him back and stopped him, and he ordered Dorbei Dokhshin instead to go and fight again. Dorbei Dokhshin put his soldiers and horses in strict order. At the place where the road taken before had been blocked he made an empty show of noise and force, and then went instead by the narrow track where the beasts of Khulaan Bukha went. Fearing also that his men might be afraid and not go forward, he had each man carry ten rods, so that anyone who did not go forward might be dealt with by them. He had each man carry an adze and an ax and a saw and a chisel and such tools as well, to cut away the trees that blocked the road. When they reached the top of the mountain and looked down on the people of the land of Tumad, it was like looking down through a smoke hole from above. The great army pushed straight in, and the people, never thinking they would come so suddenly, were taken captive as they sat at their feast.
3Khorchi is seized over thirty women
Before this, Khorchi the officer and Khuduka Beki, the two of them, had been seized by the Tumad and were held by Botokhai Tarkhun. The reason the two men were seized was this. Taizu had granted Khorchi thirty wives. Khorchi, knowing that the women of the Tumad were fair, tried to take thirty of them, and the people rose against him and seized him. When Taizu learned of it, he sent Khuduka Beki, because he knew the movements of the people of the forest, and he too was seized. After the Tumad had been brought in, Taizu gave a hundred of the Tumad people to Boroul as a reward, gave thirty Tumad women to Khorchi, and gave Botokhai Tarkhun to Khuduka Beki.
4The people are shared out among his mother, his brothers, and his sons
Taizu shared out the people among his mother and his younger brothers and his several sons, saying, "The one who founded the state with me is my mother. The eldest among my sons is Jochi. The youngest among my younger brothers is Otchigin." To his mother and Otchigin together he gave ten thousand of the people. His mother thought it few, but said nothing. To his son Jochi he gave nine thousand, to Chagadai eight thousand, to Ogodei five thousand, to Tolui five thousand, to his brother Khasar four thousand, to Alchidai two thousand, and to Belgutei one thousand five hundred. His uncle Daaritai had once followed Ong Khan, and Taizu wished to cast him out. Boorchu and two others said to Taizu, "For a man to break his own house is like a man putting out his own fire. Of what your father left behind, this one uncle alone remains. How can you bear to cast him out? Though he knows nothing of affairs, think of your father and do not cut him off." At this Taizu's heart was stung, and he consented, and his anger died away.
5Officers are appointed to each of them
Taizu gave ten thousand of the people to his mother Hoelun and to Otchigin, and appointed Kuchu and three other officers to them. To Jochi he appointed Khunan and two other officers, and to Chagadai he appointed Kharachar and two other officers. He said also, "Chagadai is hard in temper. Have Kokochos look to him closely and speak at his side morning and evening." To Ogodei he appointed Iluga and one other, to Tolui Jedei and one other, to Khasar Jebke, and to Alchidai Chaurkhai.
6The mother bares her two breasts and rebukes him
Munglik of the Khongkhotan clan had seven sons, and the fourth son was named Kokochu. He became a shaman and was called Teb Tenggeri. The seven brothers together acted harshly and beat Khasar, the younger brother of Taizu. Khasar came and told Taizu of it. Taizu was just then angry over another matter, and said, "You are always saying that no man can stand against you. How is it that you were beaten by him instead?" At this Khasar shed tears and rose and went out, and for three days he did not appear before Taizu. Teb Tenggeri came and said, "The will of the Everlasting Heaven came down as a spirit and said, 'Once let Temujin rule the people, and once let Khasar rule the people.' If Khasar is not done away with, there is no knowing how things will go." Taizu heard these words and went that very night to seize Khasar. Kuchu and the others told this matter to Hoelun, the mother of Taizu. Hoelun harnessed a white camel to a cart and set out through the night, and at sunrise she reached Khasar. Just then Taizu had tied Khasar's sleeves and had stripped off his hat and belt and was questioning him. When he saw that his mother had come, he was greatly startled and afraid. His mother came down from the cart in anger, loosed Khasar, and gave him back his hat and belt. Then in great anger she sat cross-legged, drew out her two breasts and laid them on her knees, and asked, "Have you seen these? These are the breasts you fed at. What fault is there in Khasar? You are destroying your own flesh and blood with your own hand. When you were small you drank this one breast dry. Khachiun and Otchigin, the two of them, could not drink this one breast dry. Khasar alone drank both of my breasts dry and made my breast light within me. For that reason Temujin has skill in his mind, and Khasar has strength and shoots well, and whenever a people rebelled he brought them in with his bow and arrow. Now that the enemy are all gone, is he of no more use?" Taizu saw that his mother's anger had died down and said, "I am afraid, and I am ashamed." When he had said this he withdrew. Afterward, without letting his mother know, Taizu took away Khasar's people and left him only one thousand four hundred. Later Hoelun learned of it, and her heart was heavy, and so she grew old before her time. Jebke, who had first been appointed to Khasar, fled away into the land of Barghujin.
7Otchigin breaks the back of Teb Tenggeri
After this, the people of the nine tongues all gathered about Teb Tenggeri, more than those who gathered about Taizu. The people of Otchigin also went over and joined them. Otchigin sent Sokhor to bring them back, and he was beaten by Teb Tenggeri and came back with a saddle on his back. The next day Otchigin went himself, and the seven brothers surrounded him and said, "How do you dare to send a man to take away our people?" And they were about to beat him. Otchigin was afraid and said, "I should not have sent a man." They said, "Since you own that you were wrong, you must take your punishment." And they made him kneel behind them. Early the next morning, before Taizu had risen, Otchigin went in and knelt and told him what had happened, and when he had finished he wept. Before Taizu had spoken, the lady Borte Ujin stretched herself, covered her breast with the quilt, and said with tears, "What kind of men are these? The Khongkhotan beat Khasar before, and now they make Otchigin kneel. What manner of thing is this? While you are yet alive they harm your younger brothers, who have grown tall as juniper trees. In days to come, when you are old, how will a people like tangled hemp or a flock of birds be willing to obey the rule of your young and unworthy sons?" When she had said this she wept. Taizu said to Otchigin, "When Teb Tenggeri comes now, do as you will." At this Otchigin rose and went out and made ready three strong men. After a little while Munglik came leading his seven sons. Teb Tenggeri came to the west side of the drinking place and had just sat down. Otchigin seized him by the collar and said, "Yesterday you told me to take my punishment. Now I will try my strength with you." As Otchigin gripped him and dragged him toward the outside, the hat of Teb Tenggeri fell beside the fire basin. His father picked it up, smelled it, and put it in his bosom. Taizu said, "Go outside and try your strength." As he was dragged out, the three strong men made ready beyond the threshold met him and seized him, broke his backbone, and threw him down at the tail of a cart on the left. Otchigin came back in and said, "Yesterday Teb Tenggeri told me to take my punishment, and today I would have tried my strength with him, but he lies there and makes excuses and will not get up. He was only an ordinary companion after all." His father Munglik understood, and said with tears, "From before the Emperor rose up, down to this day, I have been his companion." While he was still speaking, the six sons blocked the door and stood around the fire basin and rolled up their sleeves. Taizu started up and said, "Stand aside. I am going out." When he had said this he went out and stood, and the day guards who carry bow and arrow stood around him. Taizu saw that Teb Tenggeri was already dead, and had a man cover the body with a tent, and at once moved the camp away.
8The body that went out through the smoke hole
The tent that covered the body of Teb Tenggeri had its door and its smoke hole pressed shut at the first, and men were set to watch it. Toward dawn on the third day the smoke hole stood open and the body had gone out of itself. They looked, and it was so indeed. Taizu said, "Because Teb Tenggeri beat my younger brothers and slandered them without cause, Heaven did not love him and took away his very life." Then he reproached Munglik, saying, "Because you could not teach your own son, and he wished to stand equal with me, you have sent him to his death. Had I known your nature was such, it would have been better to do away with you together with Jamukha and Altan and Khuchar." He said also, "If a word spoken in the morning is changed by evening, and a word spoken in the evening is changed by morning, will it not be a shame to be talked of by men? Since it was settled before that your life should be spared, let it be." And his anger died away. After the death of Teb Tenggeri, the power of Munglik and his sons dwindled away.
