1One chariot matches eighty foot soldiers — how the arms are weighed against each other
King Wu asked Taigong, "When chariots fight foot soldiers, how many foot soldiers does one chariot match, and how many foot soldiers match one chariot? When horsemen fight foot soldiers, how many foot soldiers does one horseman match, and how many foot soldiers match one horseman? When chariots fight horsemen, how many horsemen does one chariot match, and how many horsemen match one chariot?" Taigong said, "Chariots are the wings of the army. They break firm ranks, block the strong enemy and bar the way of those who flee. Horsemen are the scouts of the army. They follow after a beaten army, cut the grain road and strike the enemy where he is at ease. So if chariots and horsemen do not meet in battle, one horseman cannot match a single foot soldier. But when the host of the three armies forms its ranks and stands against the enemy, then by the way of fighting on level ground one chariot matches eighty foot soldiers and eighty match one chariot, one horseman matches eight foot soldiers and eight match one horseman, one chariot matches ten horsemen and ten match one chariot. By the way of fighting on broken ground, one chariot matches forty foot soldiers and forty match one chariot, one horseman matches four foot soldiers and four match one horseman, one chariot matches six horsemen and six match one chariot. Chariots and horsemen are the martial arm of the army. Ten chariots break a thousand men and a hundred chariots break ten thousand men; ten horsemen put a hundred men to flight and a hundred horsemen put a thousand men to flight. These are the great numbers." King Wu said, "What of the number of officers over the chariots and the horsemen, and the rule of their ranks?" Taigong said, "In setting the number of officers over the chariots, five chariots have one leader, fifteen chariots one officer, fifty chariots one commander, and a hundred chariots one general. By the way of fighting on level ground, five chariots make a line, forty paces apart, ten paces to left and right, and sixty paces between squads. By the way of fighting on broken ground, the chariots must keep to the road; fifteen chariots make a group and thirty chariots a camp, twenty paces apart front and rear, six paces to left and right, and thirty-six paces between squads. Crosswise and lengthwise they keep one li apart, and each comes back by the old road. In setting the number of officers over the horsemen, five horsemen have one leader, ten horsemen one officer, a hundred horsemen one commander, and two hundred horsemen one general. By the way of fighting on level ground, five horsemen make a line, twenty paces apart front and rear, four paces to left and right, and fifty paces between squads. By the way of fighting on broken ground, ten paces front and rear, two paces to left and right, and twenty-five paces between squads. Thirty horsemen make one camp and sixty horsemen one band. Crosswise and lengthwise they keep a hundred paces apart, and when they have wheeled about each comes back to his own place." King Wu said, "Good."
