In this autumn, after Hitaka no Kishi had been sent as envoy, there was a woman living at Mitsu in Naniwa who wept and said, "To my mother a brother, to me a brother. My husband like tender grass, how pitiful."
The sound of her weeping was very sad, and it cut men's hearts.
Kaso, a man of the village of Hishiki, heard it, came forward, and said, "Why is your weeping so sad as this?"
The woman answered, "Think upon the autumn onion, how it grows double."
Kaso said, "So it is." At once he knew what she meant.
One who was with him did not grasp her meaning, and asked, "How do you know?"
He answered, "Funame of the Tamatsukuribe in Naniwa was married to the Kara fisherman Hatake and bore Nakume. Nakume was married to Yamaki, a man of Suminomichi, and bore Akitame. The Kara fisherman Hatake and his daughter Nakume both died long ago. Yamaki, the man of Suminomichi, went up and had to do with Funame of the Tamatsukuribe, and Arashi was born. Arashi took Akitame to wife.
Now Arashi has set out for Goryeo in the train of Hitaka no Kishi. Because of this his wife Akitame walks to and fro, looking back and longing. She has lost her thread and her heart is wounded, and so the sound of her weeping is the more piercing."

Funame of the Tamatsukuri and the Kara fisherman Hatake became husband and wife and bore Nakume. Yamaki, a man of Suminomichi, took Nakume to wife and bore Akitame. Hatake the Kara fisherman, the father of Yamaki's wife, and his daughter Nakume both died long ago. Yamaki, the man of Suminomichi, went up and had to do with his wife's mother, Funame of the Tamatsukuribe, and Arashi was born. Arashi took Akitame to wife. One book says that Funame of the Tamatsukuribe bore Nakume by her former husband, the Kara fisherman Hatake, and bore Arashi again by her later husband, Yamaki the man of Suminomichi. Then Nakume and Arashi were brother and sister by different fathers, and for this reason Akitame, the daughter of Nakume, called Arashi "to my mother a brother." Nakume was married to Yamaki and bore Akitame, and Yamaki also had to do with Funame and bore Arashi. Then Akitame and Arashi were brother and sister by different mothers, and for this reason Akitame called her husband Arashi "to me a brother." In old times they did not speak of elder and younger among brothers and sisters. A woman called a man brother, and a man called a woman sister. And so it was only said, "To my mother a brother, to me a brother."
