Nihon Shoki (The Chronicles of Japan)日本書紀

Prince Toneri and others · 720 (Japan, 4th year of Yōrō) · Japan · 44 volumes · 172,532 Chinese characters

The oldest official history of Japan. Thirty volumes, from the age of the gods down to Empress Jitō. The two books of the age of the gods set the differing versions of one myth side by side, each opened with “one account has it thus”, so that the stories that disagree are not hidden away. Accounts touching Baekje, Silla, Goguryeo and Imna stand at 1,379 places, which makes it also the book with the most to set beside the Korean histories.

44 entries in 30 volumes fully translated (1,793 paragraphs, 668 notes, 85 「one book says」 passages, 19 songs). 1,379 passages touch on Korea — the chief counterpart book for the conflicting records.
