1The Horse on the Moor and a Child Named Kasane
At a place called Kurobane in Nasu there was someone I knew, and from here I meant to cut across the moor and take the direct road. I was walking with a far-off village in view when the rain came and the day darkened, so I borrowed a night's lodging at a farmer's house, and when it grew light I went on again through the middle of the moor.
There was a horse there, put out to graze. I told my trouble to a man cutting grass, and though he was a countryman he was not after all a man without feeling. "What is to be done? And yet this moor runs off in every direction, and the paths wind and cross, so I fear a traveler will lose his way. Send the horse back from the place where it stops," he said, and lent it to me.
Two small children came running after the horse. One was a little girl, and her name was Kasane. The name was one I had not heard before, and it was dear to me, and so:
Kasane, then / it must be the name of an eightfold pink
