Before long I came to a village, tied the fee to the saddle, and sent the horse back. I called on a man of the Jōbōji house, the deputy of Kurobane, and my host, who had not looked for me, was so glad that our talk went on day and night. His younger brother Tōsui and others came diligently morning and evening, took me to his own house, and had me invited to the houses of his kin as well.
As the days passed, one day I strolled outside the town and saw the old ground of the inuoumono, where dogs were shot at. I pushed through the bamboo grass of Nasu and sought out the old grave of Tamamo no Mae. From there I went to worship at the Hachiman Shrine. When Yoichi shot at the fan for a target, it was at this shrine, they say, that he swore, "Above all, Shō Hachiman, guardian deity of my own province." So the sense of the god answering came over me all the more keenly. When the day darkened I returned to Tōsui's house.
There is a temple of the Shugen order called Kōmyōji. I was invited there and went, and I bowed in the Gyōjadō, the hall of the ascetic.
In the summer mountains / I bow before the high clogs and set out on my road
