In the domain of Yamagata there is a mountain temple called Risshakuji. It was founded by Jikaku Daishi, and it is a place of rare clearness and quiet. People urged me to see it once, so I turned back from Obanazawa. The distance between is about seven ri.
The sun had not yet set. I took a bed at a priest's house at the foot of the hill and climbed to the hall on the mountain. Rock is heaped upon rock to make the mountain. The pines and the cypresses have grown old, the earth and the stones have aged, and the moss is smooth. The cloisters on the rocks have their doors shut, and not a sound is heard. I went around the cliffs, crawled over the rocks, and worshipped at the Buddha hall. The beauty of the place was so still that I felt only my heart growing clear.
Stillness — / soaking into the rock, the voice of the cicadas
