Haguro
1Climbing Mount Haguro
On the third day of the sixth month Sora and I climbed Mount Haguro. We sought out a man named Zushi Sakichi and were received by Egaku Ajari, who serves in place of the abbot. He lodged us at the sub-temple in Minamidani, and his pity for us was warm and close.
How grateful I am — / the snow made fragrant, Minamidani
On the fourth day there was a haikai gathering at the main hall.
2How the three mountains came to be
On the fifth day I worshipped at the Gongen shrine. Of Nōjo Daishi, who opened this mountain, it is not known in what age he lived. In the Engishiki it stands written as the shrine of Satoyama in Ushū. Was it in the copying that the character 「黑」 was made into 「里山」? Is 「Ushū Satoyama」 shortened to give 「Hagurosan」? As for the name Dewa, the putting out of feathers, they say the Fudoki has it that the feathers of birds were offered from this province as tribute.
Gassan and Yudono are joined with it to make the three mountains. This temple belongs to Tōeizan in Edo, that is Kan'eiji. The moon of shikan, the Tendai way of stillness and insight, is bright, and beside it hangs the lamp of endon yūzū, the sudden and perfect law that runs through all things. The priests' houses stand ridge by ridge, and the mountain ascetics work hard at their practice. The people of the countryside hold the power of this holy mountain and holy ground in honor and in fear. Its flourishing has lasted long, and it may truly be called a splendid mountain.
