King Hyoso孝照王

King Hyojo ascended the throne. His name was Ihong (理洪), and he was the crown prince of King Sinmun. His mother was of the house of Kim, Queen Sinmok, the daughter of Kim Heumun of the rank of ilgilchan. Zetian of Tang sent an envoy to mourn and to make offering, and then invested the king as King of Silla, with the titles of grand general who upholds the state, acting grand general of the Left Leopard Guard, and governor of Gyerimju. The Left and Right Ibangbu were changed to the Left and Right Uibangbu, because the character i (理) trespassed on the king's name.

In the first year, in the eighth month, Wonseon of the rank of daeachan was made jungsi. The eminent monk Dojeung came back from Tang and presented a chart of the heavens.

In the third year, in spring, the first month, the king sacrificed in person at the Singung, and a great amnesty was granted. Munyeong was made sangdaedeung. Kim Inmun died in Tang, at the age of sixty-six. In winter the two fortresses Songak and Ujam were built.

In the fourth year the ja month (子月) was made the first month. Gaewon was appointed sangdaedeung. In winter, the tenth month, the earth shook in the capital. Wonseon the jungsi retired in old age. The two markets of the west and the south were set up.

In the fifth year, in spring, the first month, Dangwon of the rank of ichan was made jungsi. In summer, the fourth month, there was drought in the west of the country.

In the sixth year, in autumn, the seventh month, Wansanju presented a fine stalk of grain, whose furrows were different but whose ear was one. In the ninth month a feast was given to the many ministers at the Imhaejeon.

In the seventh year, in spring, the first month, Chewon of the rank of ichan was made chonggwan of Uduju. In the second month the earth shook in the capital, and a great wind broke the trees. Dangwon the jungsi retired in old age, and Sunwon of the rank of daeachan was made jungsi. In the third month an envoy from the country of Japan arrived, and the king received him at the Sungnyejeon. In autumn, the seventh month, there was a great flood in the capital.

In the eighth year, in spring, the second month, a white vapor stretched across the sky, and a comet appeared in the east. An envoy was sent to pay court to Tang and to offer the products of the land.

In autumn, the seventh month, the water of the Eastern Sea turned the color of blood, and after five days it was as before. In the ninth month the water of the Eastern Sea struck against itself, and the sound was heard in the royal capital. The drums and horns in the armory sounded of themselves. Mihil, a man of Sinchon, got a lump of yellow gold weighing a hundred pun. He offered it up, and he was given the post of nambyeonjeil and granted a hundred seok of grain.

In the ninth year the in month (寅月) was again made the first month. In summer, the fifth month, Gyeongyeong of the rank of ichan plotted a revolt and was put to death. Sunwon the jungsi was held answerable with him and dismissed. In the sixth month Seseong entered the moon.

In the tenth year, in spring, the second month, a comet entered the moon. In summer, the fifth month, Jeil of the rank of ilgilchan, the governor of Yeongam-gun, turned his back on the public good and worked for himself. He was punished with a hundred strokes of the rod and sent to an island.

In the eleventh year, in autumn, the seventh month, the king died. His posthumous name was given as Hyojo (孝照), and he was buried east of Mangdeoksa.
