King Hyoseong孝成王
1King Hyoseong ascends the throne
孝成王立。諱承慶，聖德王第二子。母，炤德王后。大赦。三月，改司正丞及左右議方府丞，並爲佐。以伊飡貞宗爲上大等，阿飡義忠爲中侍。夏五月，地震。秋九月，流星入大微。冬十月，入唐沙飡抱質廻。十二月，遣使入唐獻方物。
King Hyoseong ascended the throne. His name was Seunggyeong (承慶), and he was the second son of King Seongdeok. His mother was Queen Sodeok. A great amnesty was granted.
In the third month the seung of the Sajeong and the seung of the left and right Uibangbu were all changed to jwa (佐). Jeongjong of the rank of ichan was made sangdaedeung, and Uichung, of the rank of achan, was made jungsi.
In summer, the fifth month, the earth shook. In autumn, the ninth month, a shooting star went into Taemiwon. In winter, the tenth month, Pojil, of the rank of sachan, who had gone into Tang, came back. In the twelfth month an envoy was sent into Tang to present the products of the land.
2Second year — Xing Shu comes to condole
二年，春二月，唐玄宗聞聖德王薨，悼惜久之，遣左贊善大夫邢璹，以鴻臚少卿，往吊祭，贈太子太保，且冊嗣王爲開府儀同三司新羅王。璹將發，帝製詩序，太子已下百寮，咸賦詩以送。帝謂璹曰：「新羅號爲君子之國，頗知書記，有類中國。以卿惇儒，故持節往，宜演經義，使知大國儒敎之盛。」又以國人善碁，詔率府兵曹叅軍楊季膺爲副，國高奕皆出其下。於是，王厚贈璹等金寶藥物。唐遣使，詔冊王妃朴氏。三月，遣金元玄入唐賀正。夏四月，唐使臣邢璹，以老子《道德經》等文書，獻于王。白虹貫日，所夫里郡河水變血。
In the second year, in spring, the second month, Xuanzong of Tang heard that King Seongdeok had died, and he grieved and was sorry for a long while. He sent Xing Shu, the zuo zanshan dafu, as honglu shaoqing, to condole and to sacrifice, and he gave the dead king the office of taizi taibao, and invested the king who had taken up the succession as Commander Unequalled in Honour and King of Silla.
When Xing Shu was about to set out, the Emperor made the preface to a poem, and the crown prince and all the officials below him made poems and sent him off with them. The Emperor said to Xing Shu, "Silla is called a country of gentlemen. It knows letters and records well and is much like China. You are a solid scholar, and so you are sent bearing the tally. You are to set forth the meaning of the classics, and let them know how the teaching of Confucius flourishes in a great country."
Also, because the people of that country were good at the game of go, by edict Yang Jiying, the bingcao canjun of the Shuaifu, was made deputy envoy, and all the high players of the country were below him. Then the king richly gave Xing Shu and the others gold and treasure and medicines.
Tang sent an envoy, and by edict the king's consort, of the house of Bak, was invested as queen. In the third month Kim Wonhyeon was sent into Tang to give the New Year greeting.
In summer, the fourth month, Xing Shu, the envoy of Tang, presented to the king the Daodejing of Laozi and other writings. A white rainbow pierced the sun, and the water of the river in Soburi-gun turned to blood.
3Third year — Heonyeong is made crown prince
三年，春正月，拜祖考廟。中侍義忠卒，以伊飡信忠爲中侍。善天宮成。賜邢璹黄金三十兩、布五十匹、人蔘一百斤。二月，拜王弟憲英爲波珍飡。三月，納伊飡順元女惠明爲妃。夏五月，封波珍飡憲英爲太子。秋九月，完山州獻白鵲。狐鳴月城宮中，狗咬殺之。
In the third year, in spring, the first month, the king paid his respects at the shrine of his grandfather and his father. Uichung the jungsi died, and Sinchung of the rank of ichan was made jungsi. Seoncheongung was finished. Xing Shu was given thirty nyang of yellow gold, fifty pil of cloth and a hundred geun of ginseng.
In the second month the king's younger brother Heonyeong was made pajinchan. In the third month Hyemyeong, the daughter of Sunwon of the rank of ichan, was taken as queen. In summer, the fifth month, Heonyeong of the rank of pajinchan was raised to be crown prince.
In autumn, the ninth month, Wansanju presented a white magpie. A fox cried within the palace of Wolseong, and a dog bit it and killed it.
4Fourth year — Yeongjong plots a revolt
四年，春三月，唐遣使，冊夫人金氏爲王妃。夏五月，鎭星犯軒轅大星。秋七月，有一緋衣女人，自隷橋下出，謗朝政，過孝信公門，忽不見。八月，波珍飡永宗謀叛，伏誅。先是，永宗女入後宮，王絶愛之，恩渥日甚。王妃嫉妬，與族人謀殺之。永宗怨王妃宗黨，因此叛。
In the fourth year, in spring, the third month, Tang sent an envoy and invested the lady of the house of Kim as queen. In summer, the fifth month, Jinseong trespassed on the great star of Heonwon.
In autumn, the seventh month, a woman in red clothing came out from under Yegyo and spoke ill of the government of the court, and as she passed the gate of Lord Hyosin she was suddenly not to be seen.
In the eighth month Yeongjong, of the rank of pajinchan, plotted a revolt and was put to death. Before this the daughter of Yeongjong had come into the inner palace, and the king loved her greatly and his favor to her grew heavier by the day. The queen was jealous of her and plotted with the people of her house to kill her. Yeongjong bore a grudge against the kindred of the queen, and for this reason he revolted.
5Fifth year — the soldiers of the crossbow are reviewed
五年，夏四月，命大臣貞宗、思仁，閲弩兵。
In the fifth year, in summer, the fourth month, the great ministers Jeongjong and Sain were commanded to review the soldiers of the crossbow.
6Sixth year — King Hyoseong dies
六年，春二月，東北地震，有聲如雷。夏五月，流星犯參大星，王薨。諡曰孝成。以遺命，燒柩於法流寺南，散骨東海。
In the sixth year, in spring, the second month, the earth shook in the northeast, and there was a sound like thunder. In summer, the fifth month, a shooting star trespassed on the great star of Sam. The king died. His posthumous name was given as Hyoseong (孝成). By his dying word his coffin was burned south of Beomnyusa, and his bones were scattered on the Eastern Sea.
