King Chadae次大王
1King Chadae ascends the throne
次大王，諱遂成，大祖大王同母弟也。勇壯有威嚴，小仁慈。受大祖大王推讓，卽位，時年七十六。
King Chadae's name was Suseong (遂成), and he was the younger brother of King Taejo by the same mother. He was brave and stout and had an awe about him, but he had little kindness or love in him. He received the throne that King Taejo pressed upon him and gave up to him, and he ascended the throne. He was then seventy-six years of age.
2The second year — Go Bokjang is put to death
二年，春二月，拜貫那沛者彌儒為左輔。三月，誅右輔高福章。福章臨死嘆曰：「痛哉，寃乎！我當時為先朝近臣，其可見賊亂之人，默然不言哉？恨先君不用吾言，以至於此。今君甫陟大位，宜新政敎以示百姓，而以不義殺一忠臣。吾與其主生於無道之時，不如死之速也。」乃卽刑。遠近聞之，莫不憤惜。秋七月，左輔穆度婁稱疾退老，以桓那于台菸支留為左輔，加爵為大主簿。冬十月，沸流那陽神為中畏大夫，加爵為于台，皆王之故舊。十一月，地震。
In the second year, in spring, the second month, Miyu, paeja of Gwanna, was made jwabo.
In the third month Go Bokjang the ubo was put to death. As Bokjang came to his death he sighed and said. "How it pains me, and how wrongful it is. I was then a close officer of the former court. How could I see a man who robbed and threw the country into disorder, and keep silent and say nothing? It grieves me that the former lord did not use my words, and that it has come to this. Now the lord has only just climbed to the great place. He ought to make his rule and his teaching new, to show it to the people, and instead he kills a loyal officer against all right. Rather than live with such a lord in a time when there is no way, I had better die quickly." Then he was put to death at once. Those far and near heard of it, and there was none who was not angry and did not grieve for him.
In autumn, the seventh month, Mok Doru the jwabo named an illness and said that he was old, and withdrew. So Eojiryu, utae of Hwanna, was made jwabo, and his rank was raised and he was made daejubu. In winter, the tenth month, Yangsin of Biryuna was made jungoedaebu, and his rank was raised and he was made utae. They were all old friends of the king. In the eleventh month the earth shook.
3The third year — the sons of King Taejo die
三年，夏四月，王使人，殺太祖大王元子莫勤，其弟莫德恐禍連及，自縊。
In the third year, in summer, the fourth month, the king had men kill Makgeun, the eldest son of King Taejo. His younger brother Makdeok feared that the disaster would reach him too, and he hanged himself.
4Historian's comment — he gave the great place away lightly
論曰：「昔宋宣公不立其子與夷，而立其弟穆公，小不忍，亂大謀，以致累世之亂，故《春秋》『大居正』。今大祖王不知義，輕大位以授不仁之弟，禍及一忠臣、二愛子，可勝歎耶。」

In the old days Duke Xuan of Song did not set up his son Yuyi but set up his younger brother Duke Mu. He could not bear a small thing, and so he threw the great plan into disorder and brought on the disorder of many generations. And so the Chunqiu holds it a great thing to abide in what is right. Now King Taejo did not know what was right. He held the great place lightly and gave it to an unkind younger brother, and the disaster reached one loyal officer and two beloved sons. How can one bear the sighing of it?
5The third year — he kills the shaman over a white fox
秋七月，王田于平儒原，白狐隨而鳴。王射之不中。問於師巫，曰：「狐者，妖獸非吉祥，况白其色，尤可怪也。然天不能諄諄其言，故示以妖怪者，欲令人君恐懼修省以自新也。君若修德，則可以轉禍為福。王曰：「凶則為凶，吉則為吉，爾旣以為妖，又以為福，何其誣耶？」遂殺之。
In autumn, the seventh month, the king hunted on the Pyeongyuwon plain, and a white fox followed him and cried out. The king shot at it and did not hit it. He asked the shaman about it, and the shaman said.
"The fox is a beast of ill omen, and it is no sign of good fortune. Still more, that its colour is white is stranger yet. Yet heaven cannot speak its words over and over as a man does, and so it shows us a strange and fearful thing. It wishes to make the lord fear and look into himself and make himself new. If the lord will cultivate his virtue, then he may turn disaster about and make it good fortune."
The king said. "If a thing is ill, then it is ill. If it is good, then it is good. You have said already that it is of ill omen, and now you say it is good fortune. How you deceive me." In the end he killed him.
6The fourth year — five planets gather in the east
四年，夏四月丁卯晦，日有食之。五月，五星聚於東方。日者畏王之怒，誣告王曰：「是君之德也，國之福也。」王喜。冬十二月，無氷。
In the fourth year, in summer, on the last day of the fourth month, jeongmyo, the sun was eclipsed.
In the fifth month five planets gathered in the east. The diviner feared the king's anger, and he deceived the king and told him. "This is the virtue of the lord, and it is the good fortune of the country." The king was glad.
In winter, the twelfth month, there was no ice.
7The eighth year — a guest star trespasses on the moon
八年，夏六月，隕霜。冬十二月，雷，地震。晦，客星犯月。
In the eighth year, in summer, the sixth month, frost fell. In winter, the twelfth month, it thundered and the earth shook. On the last day of the month a guest star trespassed on the moon.
8The thirteenth year — a comet appears at the Dipper
十三年，春二月，星孛于北斗。夏五月甲戌晦，日有食之。
In the thirteenth year, in spring, the second month, a comet appeared at the Northern Dipper. In summer, on the last day of the fifth month, gapsul, the sun was eclipsed.
9The twentieth year — Myeongnim Dapbu kills the king
二十年，春正月晦，日有食之。三月，大祖大王薨於別宮，年百十九歲。冬十月，椽那皀衣明臨荅夫，因民不忍，弑王。號為次大王。
In the twentieth year, in spring, on the last day of the first month, the sun was eclipsed. In the third month King Taejo died in the separate palace, a hundred and nineteen years of age. In winter, the tenth month, Myeongnim Dapbu, joui of Yeonna, killed the king, for the people could bear him no longer. He was called King Chadae (次大王).
