Samguk Sagi (History of the Three Kingdoms) Annals of Baekje The oldest surviving history of Korea. It is made up of the annals of Silla, Goguryeo and Baekje, together with the treatises, the tables and the biographies. Kim Busik set his own judgments here and there in passages marked as his comment, so what the compiler doubted and what he rebuked stands there still.

1King Seong ascends the throne

聖王,諱明襛,武寧王之子也。智識英邁,能斷事。武寧薨,繼位,國人稱為聖王。秋八月,高句麗兵至浿水,王命左將志忠,帥步騎一萬,出戰退之。

King Seong (聖王) was named Myeongnong (明襛), and he was the son of King Muryeong. His wisdom and his understanding were outstanding and beyond the common, and he could decide matters well. When Muryeong died he succeeded to the throne, and the people of the country called him King Seong.

In autumn, the eighth month, troops of Goguryeo came to the Paesu, and the king ordered Jichung the jwajang to lead ten thousand foot and horse and go out to fight them and drive them off.

2The second year — Liang makes him general who settles the east

二年,梁高祖詔冊王為持節都督百濟諸軍事綏東將軍百濟王。

In the second year Gaozu of Liang invested the king by edict as one bearing the tally, commander of all military affairs of Baekje, general who settles the east, and king of Baekje.

3The third year — envoys are exchanged with Silla

三年,春二月,與新羅交聘。

In the third year, in spring, the second month, envoys were exchanged with Silla.

4The fourth year — Ungjinseong is repaired

四年,冬十月,修葺熊津城,立沙井柵。

In the fourth year, in winter, the tenth month, Ungjinseong was repaired and the palisade at Sajeong was set up.

5The seventh year — a defeat on the plain of Ogok

七年,冬十月,高句麗王興安,躬帥兵馬來侵,拔北鄙穴城。命佐平燕謨,領步騎三萬,拒戰於五谷之原,不克。死者二千餘人。

In the seventh year, in winter, the tenth month, Heungan the king of Goguryeo led his soldiers and horses himself and came to raid, and he took Hyeolseong on the northern border. The king ordered Yeonmo the jwapyeong to lead thirty thousand foot and horse and hold them off on the plain of Ogok, but he could not overcome them. More than two thousand men died.

6The tenth year — stars fall like rain

十年,秋七月甲辰,星隕如雨。

In the tenth year, in autumn, the seventh month, on the day gapjin, stars fell like rain.

7The twelfth year — Hyeonghok trespasses on Namdu

十二年,春三月,遣使入梁朝貢。夏四月丁卯,熒惑犯南斗。

In the twelfth year, in spring, the third month, an envoy was sent into Liang with tribute. In summer, the fourth month, on the day jeongmyo, Hyeonghok (熒惑) trespassed on Namdu (南斗).

8The sixteenth year — the capital is moved to Sabi

十六年,春,移都於泗沘,國號南扶餘。

In the sixteenth year, in spring, the capital was moved to Sabi, and the name of the country was made Nambuyeo (南扶餘).

9The eighteenth year — Usanseong is attacked

十八年,秋九月,王命將軍燕會,攻高句麗牛山城,不克。

In the eighteenth year, in autumn, the ninth month, the king ordered the general Yeonhoe to attack Usanseong of Goguryeo, but he could not take it.

10The nineteenth year — a scholar of the Maoshi is asked of Liang

十九年,王遣使入梁朝貢,兼表請《毛詩》博士、涅槃等經義,幷工匠、畵師等,從之。

In the nineteenth year the king sent an envoy into Liang with tribute, and in a memorial he asked as well for a scholar of the Maoshi, for the meaning of sutras such as the Nirvana Sutra, and for artisans and painters, and this was granted.

11The twenty-fifth year — the sun is eclipsed

二十五年,春正月己亥朔,日有食之。

In the twenty-fifth year, in spring, the first month, on the first day, a gihae day, the sun was eclipsed.

12The twenty-sixth year — a great victory below Doksanseong

二十六年,春正月,高句麗王平成與濊謀,攻漢北獨山城。王遣使請救於新羅。羅王命將軍朱珍,領甲卒三千,發之。朱珍日夜兼程,至獨山城下,與麗兵一戰,大破之。

In the twenty-sixth year, in spring, the first month, Pyeongseong the king of Goguryeo plotted with Ye and attacked Doksanseong north of the Han River. The king sent an envoy to ask help of Silla, and the king of Silla ordered the general Jujin to set out with three thousand armored soldiers. Jujin marched day and night, covering two stages in one, came below Doksanseong, fought one battle with the troops of Goguryeo and broke them greatly.

13The twenty-seventh year — Hou Jing imprisons the envoys

二十七年,春正月庚申,白虹貫日。冬十月,王不知梁京師有寇賊,遣使朝貢。使人旣至,見城闕荒毁,竝號泣於端門外,行路見者,莫不灑淚。侯景聞之,大怒,執囚之。及景平,方得還國。

In the twenty-seventh year, in spring, the first month, on the day gyeongsin, a white rainbow pierced the sun.

In winter, the tenth month, the king did not know that there were robbers in the capital of Liang, and he sent envoys with tribute. When the envoys arrived and saw the walls and the palace laid waste and broken, they wept aloud together outside the Duanmen gate, and no one who passed on the road and saw them failed to shed tears. When Hou Jing heard of it he was greatly angered and seized them and shut them up. Only when Jing was put down could they come back to their country.

14The twenty-eighth year — Dosalseong is taken

二十八年,春正月,王遣將軍達己,領兵一萬,攻取高句麗道薩城。三月,高句麗兵圍金峴城。

In the twenty-eighth year, in spring, the first month, the king sent the general Dalgi with ten thousand troops to attack Dosalseong of Goguryeo and take it. In the third month troops of Goguryeo surrounded Geumhyeonseong.

15The thirty-first year — Silla sets up Sinju

三十一年,秋七月,新羅取東北鄙,置新州。冬十月,王女歸于新羅。

In the thirty-first year, in autumn, the seventh month, Silla took the northeastern border and set up Sinju. In winter, the tenth month, a daughter of the king was married into Silla.

16The thirty-second year — King Seong dies at Gucheon

三十二年,秋七月,王欲襲新羅,親帥步騎五十,夜至狗川,新羅伏兵發與戰,為亂兵所害薨。諡曰聖。

In the thirty-second year, in autumn, the seventh month, the king meant to fall upon Silla, and he led fifty foot and horse himself and came to Gucheon by night. Soldiers of Silla who lay in wait rose up and fought him, and he was harmed by the troops in the confusion and died. He was given the posthumous name Seong (聖).
