Samguk Sagi (History of the Three Kingdoms) Monographs The oldest surviving history of Korea. It is made up of the annals of Silla, Goguryeo and Baekje, together with the treatises, the tables and the biographies. Kim Busik set his own judgments here and there in passages marked as his comment, so what the compiler doubted and what he rebuked stands there still.

1The carriages of the jingol

眞骨,車材不用紫檀沉香,不得帖玳瑁,亦不敢飾以金銀玉,褥子用綾絹已下,不過二重,坐子用鈿錦二色綾已下,緣用錦已下,前後幰用小文綾紗絁已下,色以深靑碧紫紫粉,絡網用糸麻,色以紅緋翠碧,粧表且用絹布,色以紅緋靑縹,牛勒及鞅用絁絹布,環禁金銀鍮石,步搖亦禁金銀鍮石

For the jingol, red sandalwood and aloeswood are not used in the timber of the carriage, tortoiseshell may not be laid on it, and they may not dare to adorn it with gold, silver, or jade. The cushions use damask, plain silk, and anything under them, and may not be more than two layers. The seat mats use inlay, brocade, two-colored damask, and anything under them, and the edging uses brocade and anything under it. The front and rear curtains use small-figured damask, sheer silk, coarse silk, and anything under them, and the colors are deep blue, jade green, purple, and purple-pink. The netting uses silk thread and hemp, and the colors are crimson, scarlet, kingfisher blue, and jade green. For head rank six, the cushions use coarse silk, plain silk, and anything under them. The seat mats use coarse silk, plain silk, and hemp cloth, and have no edging. As for the front and rear curtains, they are not hung when the man goes in the train of a jingol or one higher; when he goes by himself he uses bamboo blinds or sedge mats, with edging of coarse silk, plain silk, or anything under them. The netting uses hemp cloth, and the colors are red and blue. The ox halter and the breast strap use hemp cloth, and the rings use brass, copper, and iron.

For head rank five, the cushions use only felt or hemp cloth. The front and rear curtains use only bamboo blinds and sedge mats, with edging of hide or hemp cloth. There is no halter. The breast strap uses hemp, and the rings use wood and iron.

For the bit and the stirrups, gold, silver, brass, gilding in gold or silver, and strung jade are forbidden. The breast strap and the crupper use hide and hemp.
