1Bangul dies and Yeongyun comes forward
Kim Yeongyun was a man of Saryang, the son of Bangul who held the rank of geupchan.
His grandfather Heumchun, who held the rank of gakgan, became a hwarang in the time of King Jinpyeong. His kindness ran deep and his good faith was firm, and he could win the hearts of many. When he had grown, King Munmu the Great raised him up and made him prime minister, and he served those above him with loyalty and came to the people with forbearance, and the people of the country with one voice called him a worthy minister.
In the seventh year of King Taejong the Great, a gyeongsin year, Gaozong of Tang ordered the great general Su Dingfang to strike Baekje, and Heumchun received the king's order and led fifty thousand picked troops, together with the general Yusin and others, to answer it.
In the seventh month of autumn they came to the plain of Hwangsan and met the Baekje general Gyebaek and fought, and it did not go well. Heumchun called his son Bangul and said, "For one who is a subject there is nothing like loyalty, and for one who is a son there is nothing like filial duty. To see danger and give up your life makes loyalty and filial duty both whole."
Bangul said, "Yes." Then he went into the enemy line and fought with all his strength and died.
Yeongyun was born and raised in a house of long standing, and he held himself to his name and his integrity.
In the time of King Sinmun the Great, Silbok, a bandit left over from Goguryeo, rebelled and held Bodeokseong, and the king ordered that he be struck and made Yeongyun bogigam of the Hwanggeum Seodang regiment.
When he was about to set out he said to those around him, "On this journey of mine I will not let my clan and my friends hear an ill word of me."
He saw Silbok come out seven li south of Gajamseong and form his line and wait for them, and someone told him, "These evil men now are like swallows nesting on a curtain, or fish playing in a cauldron."

His grandfather Heumchun (欽春) is also called Heumsun (欽純).
2Yeongyun goes forward alone and dies
"They are braving ten thousand deaths only to fight for one more day of life. The old saying is, 'Do not press a cornered bandit.' It would be right to draw back to the left and wait until they are worn out and then strike them, and we may take them without wetting our blades in blood."
The generals thought his words right and drew back for a while, but Yeongyun alone was not content with this and wished to fight.
One of his followers told him, "Surely these generals are not all men who cling meanly to life, a crowd who hold death dear. They called those words right because they mean to wait for an opening and take their chance by it. And you alone go straight forward. That is not right."
Yeongyun said, "To have no courage when facing the battle line is what the Book of Rites warns against. To go forward and never draw back is the plain duty of a soldier. A man decides for himself when he faces a matter. Why must he follow the crowd?"
Then he went at the enemy line, and he closed with them and fought and died.
The king heard of it and was stricken and shed tears, and said, "Without such a father there is no such son. His right feeling and his fierce spirit are to be praised." He gave him rank and reward after his death all the more generously.
