Solgeo率居
1Solgeo
Solgeo was a man of Silla. What he came from was lowly, and so the line of his kin is not written down.
He was born able to paint. Once he painted an old pine on the wall of Hwangnyongsa. Its trunk and its stem were cracked like scales, and its branches and leaves were coiled and bent. Crows and kites and swallows and sparrows would sometimes see it and fly toward it, and when they reached it they lost their footing and fell.
As the years grew long the colors darkened, and the monks of the temple mended it with paint, and the birds and the sparrows came no more.
The Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara of Bunhwangsa in Gyeongju and the image of Vimalakirti of Dansoksa in Jinju are also traces of his brush, and the world hands them down as divine paintings.
