Domi都彌
1The wife of Domi
Domi was a man of Baekje. He was a small man of the registers, but he knew right and reason well enough. His wife was beautiful and fair and had conduct of firm principle as well, and the people of the time spoke of her.
King Gaeru heard of it and called Domi and said to him, "The virtue of a woman puts chastity and purity first, but if in a dark and hidden place where there is no one she is drawn with clever words, then those who do not move in their hearts are few."
He answered, "The feelings of a person cannot be measured. But one such as the wife of your servant would not have a second heart though she died."
The king wished to test it. He kept Domi back with a task, and he had one close subject borrow the clothes and the horse and the attendants of the king and come to the house by night, and he sent a man ahead to tell them that the king was coming.
He said to the wife, "I have long heard of your beauty, and I have won you from Domi in a wager. Tomorrow I shall take you in and make you a palace woman. From this time on your body is mine." Then he was about to force her.
The wife said, "A king has no empty words. How should I dare not to obey? I ask that the great king go into the room first. I shall change my clothes and then come in."
She withdrew and dressed up a serving girl and sent her in instead. The king afterward knew that he had been deceived, and he was greatly angry, and he charged Domi falsely with a crime and burned out both of his eyes, and he had men drag him out and set him in a small boat and float him on the river.
Then he took the wife and would force her by violence. The wife said, "Now my husband is lost and I am one body alone, and I cannot hold myself up.
2She meets a boat at the mouth of the river
What is more, I am to serve the king. How should I dare go against him? Only now my monthly courses are upon me and my whole body is unclean. I ask that I may wait for another day and bathe in scented water and then come."
The king believed her and allowed it. The wife fled at once and came to the mouth of the river, but she could not cross, and she called on heaven and wept aloud. Then all at once she saw a lone boat coming along on the waves. She rode it and came to Cheonseong Island, and she met her husband, who had not yet died and was digging up grass roots and eating them.
Then they took a boat together and came below Sansan in Goguryeo, and the people of Goguryeo pitied them and gave them clothing and food. So they lived on as they could, and they ended their days in a stranger's land.
