Fourth Guide to the Central Mountains中次四經
《中次四經》釐山之首,曰鹿蹄之山,其上多玉,其下多金。甘水出焉,而北流注于洛,其中多泠石。
The head of the Lishan range in the Fourth Guide to the Central Mountains is Mount Luti. On its heights there is much jade, and below there is much gold. The Gan River rises here and flows north into the Luo. In its waters there is much lingshi stone.
西五十里,曰扶豬之山,其上多礝石。有獸焉,其狀如貉而人目,其名曰䴦。虢水出焉,而北流注于洛,其中多瓀石。
Fifty li west is Mount Fuzhu. On its heights there is much ruan stone. There is a beast here shaped like a marten but with the eyes of a man. It is called the yin. The Guo River rises here and flows north into the Luo. In its waters there is much ruan stone.
又西一百二十里,曰釐山,其陽多玉,其陰多蒐。有獸焉,其狀如牛。蒼身,其音如嬰兒,是食人,其名曰犀渠。滽滽之水出焉,而南流注于伊水。有獸焉,名曰𤢺,其狀如獳犬而有鱗,其毛如彘鬣。
A hundred and twenty li further west is Mount Li. On its sunny side there is much jade, and on its shaded side much madder. There is a beast here shaped like an ox, with a blue body. Its voice is like a baby's, and it eats people. It is called the xiqu. The Yongyong River rises here and flows south into the Yi River. There is a beast here called the xie. It is shaped like an angry dog but has scales, and its hair is like the bristles of a pig.
又西二百里,曰箕尾之山,多穀,多涂石,其上多㻬琈之玉。
Two hundred li further west is Mount Jiwei. There are many paper mulberries and much tushi stone, and on its heights there is much tufu jade.
又西二百五十里,曰柄山,其上多玉,其下多銅。滔雕之水出焉,而北流注于洛。其中多羬羊。有木焉,其狀如樗,其葉如桐而莢實,其名曰茇,可以毒魚。
Two hundred and fifty li further west is Mount Bing. On its heights there is much jade, and below there is much copper. The Taodiao River rises here and flows north into the Luo. In its waters there are many xianyang sheep. There is a tree here shaped like the ailanthus, with leaves like the paulownia and pods for fruit. It is called the ba, and it can poison fish.
又西二百里,曰白邊之山,其上多金玉,其下多青雄黃。
Two hundred li further west is Mount Baibian. On its heights there is much gold and jade, and below there is much green realgar.
又西二百里,曰熊耳之山,其上多漆,其下多椶。浮濠之水出焉,而西流注于洛,其中多水玉,多人魚。有草焉,其狀如蘓而赤華,名曰葶薴,可以毒魚。
Two hundred li further west is Mount Xiong'er. On its heights there are many lacquer trees, and below there are many palms. The Fuhao River rises here and flows west into the Luo. In its waters there is much rock crystal and there are many renyu fish. There is a plant here shaped like the perilla, with red flowers. It is called the tingning, and it can poison fish.
又西三百里,曰牡山,其上多文石,其下多竹箭竹䉋,其獸多㸲牛、羬羊,鳥多赤鷩。
Three hundred li further west is Mount Mu. On its heights there is much patterned stone, and below there is much small bamboo and mi bamboo. Among its beasts there are many zuo oxen and xianyang sheep, and among its birds there are many red bie.
又西三百五十里,曰讙舉之山。雒水出焉,而東北流注于玄扈之水,其中多馬腸之物。此二山者,洛閒也。
Three hundred and fifty li further west is Mount Huanju. The Luo River rises here and flows northeast into the Xuanhu River. In its waters there are many things like the machang. These two mountains lie between the Luo.
凡釐山之首,自鹿蹄之山至于玄扈之山,凡九山,千六百七十里。其神狀皆人面獸身。其祠之,毛用一白雞,祈而不糈,以采衣之。
In all, the head of the Lishan range runs from Mount Luti to Mount Xuanhu, nine mountains in all, one thousand six hundred and seventy li. The gods there are all shaped with the face of a man and the body of a beast. When sacrifice is made to them, one white cock whole in coat is used. Prayer is made and no offering rice is used, and the victim is clothed in colored cloth.
