Shanhaijing (The Classic of Mountains and Seas) Classic of the Mountains — Centre The oldest geography of the lands beyond the mountains and outside the seas, and a storehouse of myth. No single hand made it: it took shape from the Warring States down to the Han through many hands, and in the fourth century Guo Pu set his commentary to it. The nine-tailed fox, the jingwei bird, Kuafu, Xingtian and Xiwangmu all come from here. "Within the Eastern Sea, in a corner of the Northern Sea, there is a land named Joseon" — one of the earliest records in which the name Joseon survives stands in this book.

《中次五經》薄山之首,曰苟牀之山,無草木,多怪石。

The head of the Boshan range in the Fifth Guide to the Central Mountains is Mount Gouchuang. There are no plants or trees, and there are many strange stones.

東三百里,曰首山,其陰多榖柞,其草多𦬸芫,其陽多㻬琈之玉,木多槐。其陰有谷,曰机谷,多䲦鳥,其狀如梟而三目,有耳,其音如錄,食之已墊。

Three hundred li east is Mount Shou. On its shaded side there are many paper mulberries and oaks, and among its plants there are many radishes and yuanhua. On its sunny side there is much tufu jade, and among its trees there are many pagoda trees. On its shaded side there is a valley called the Ji Valley. There are many di birds there, shaped like an owl but with three eyes, and they have ears. Their voice is like the lu, and one who eats them is cured of damp sickness.

又東三百里,曰縣劚之山,無草木,多文石。

Three hundred li further east is Mount Xianzhu. There are no plants or trees, and there is much patterned stone.

又東三百里,曰蔥聾之山,無草木,多𢈦石。

Three hundred li further east is Mount Conglong. There are no plants or trees, and there is much you stone.

東北五百里,曰條谷之山,其木多槐桐,其草多芍藥、虋冬。

Five hundred li to the northeast is Mount Tiaogu. Among its trees there are many pagoda trees and paulownias, and among its plants there are many peonies and mendong.

又北十里,曰超山,其陰多蒼玉,其陽有井,冬有水而夏竭。

Ten li further north is Mount Chao. On its shaded side there is much blue jade, and on its sunny side there is a well. In winter it has water, and in summer it dries up.

又東五百里,曰成侯之山,其上多櫄木,其草多芃。

Five hundred li further east is Mount Chenghou. On its heights there are many chun trees, and among its plants there is much peng.

又東五百里,曰朝歌之山,谷多美堊。

Five hundred li further east is Mount Zhaoge. In its valleys there is much fine white clay.

又東五百里,曰槐山,谷多金錫。

Five hundred li further east is Mount Huai. In its valleys there is much gold and tin.

又東十里,曰歷山,其木多槐,其陽多玉。

Ten li further east is Mount Li. Among its trees there are many pagoda trees, and on its sunny side there is much jade.

又東十里,曰尸山,多蒼玉,其獸多麖。尸水出焉,南流注于洛水,其中多美玉。

Ten li further east is Mount Shi. There is much blue jade, and among its beasts there are many large deer. The Shi River rises here and flows south into the Luo. In its waters there is much fine jade.

又東十里,曰良餘之山,其上多穀柞,無石。餘水出于其陰,而北流注于河;乳水出于其陽,而東南流注于洛。

Ten li further east is Mount Liangyu. On its heights there are many paper mulberries and oaks, and there are no stones. The Yu River rises on its shaded side and flows north into the Yellow River, and the Ru River rises on its sunny side and flows southeast into the Luo.

又東南十里,曰蠱尾之山,多礪石、赤銅。龍餘之水出焉,而東南流注于洛。

Ten li further southeast is Mount Guwei. There are many whetstones and much red copper. The Longyu River rises here and flows southeast into the Luo.

又東北二十里,曰升山,其木其多榖柞棘,其草多藇蕙,多寇脫。黃酸之水出焉,而北流注于河,其中多璇玉。

Twenty li further northeast is Mount Sheng. Among its trees there are many paper mulberries, oaks and thorn trees, and among its plants there are many yams and hui orchids, and much koutuo. The Huangsuan River rises here and flows north into the Yellow River. In its waters there is much xuan jade.

又東二十里,曰陽虛之山,多金,臨于玄扈之水。

Twenty li further east is Mount Yangxu. There is much gold, and it comes up against the Xuanhu River.

凡薄山之首,自苟林之山至于陽虛之山,凡十六山,二千九百八十二里。升山,冢也,其祠禮:太牢,嬰用吉玉。首山,䰠也,其祠用稌、黑犧、太牢之具、糱釀;干儛,置鼓;嬰用一璧。尸水,合天也,肥牲祠之,用一黑犬于上,用一雌雞于下,刉一牝羊,獻血。嬰用吉玉,采之,饗之。

In all, the head of the Boshan range runs from Mount Goulin to Mount Yangxu, sixteen mountains in all, two thousand nine hundred and eighty two li. Mount Sheng is the chief mountain. The rite of sacrifice to it: the great offering is set out, and for the ying auspicious jade is used. Mount Shou is where a god dwells. For its sacrifice glutinous rice, a black victim, the furnishings of the great offering, and yeast wine are used. The shield dance is danced and drums are set out, and for the ying one bi jade is used. The Shi River is a place that joins with heaven, and a fat victim is sacrificed there. Above, one black dog is used, and below, one hen. One ewe is cut open and its blood is offered. For the ying auspicious jade is used, and it is clothed in color and given to be enjoyed.
