Seventh Guide to the Central Mountains中次七經
《中次七經》苦山之首,曰休輿之山。其上有石焉,名曰帝臺之棋,五色而文,其狀如鶉卵,帝臺之石,所以禱百神者也,服之不蠱。有草焉,其狀如蓍,赤葉而本叢生,名曰夙條,可以為簳。
The head of the Kushan range in the Zhong ci qi jing is Mount Xiuyu. On it there is a stone called the chess stone of Ditai. It has five colors and markings, and it is shaped like a quail's egg. The stones of Ditai are what one prays to the hundred gods with, and wearing one keeps off gu poison. There is a plant here shaped like the yarrow, with red leaves growing in clumps from the root. It is called the sutiao, and it can be made into arrow shafts.
東三百里,曰鼓鍾之山,帝臺之所以觴百神也。有草焉,方莖而黃華,員葉而三成,其名曰焉酸,可以為毒。其上多礪,其下多砥。
Three hundred li east is Mount Guzhong, where Ditai raised the cup to the hundred gods. There is a plant here with a square stalk and yellow flowers. Its leaves are round and grow in three layers, and it is called the yansuan. It can cure poison. On its heights there are many coarse whetstones, and below there are many fine whetstones.
又東二百里,曰姑媱之山。帝女死焉,其名曰女尸,化為䔄草,其葉胥成,其華黃,其實如菟丘,服之媚于人。
Two hundred li further east is Mount Guyao. A daughter of the Lord on High died here, and her name was Nüshi. She was transformed into the yao plant. Its leaves grow facing one another, its flowers are yellow, and its fruit is like the dodder. Wear it and one is loved by others.
又東二十里,曰苦山。有獸焉,名曰山膏,其狀如逐,赤若丹火,善詈。其上有木焉,名曰黃棘,黃華而員葉,其實如蘭。服之不字。有草焉,員葉而無莖,赤華而不實,名曰無條,服之不癭。
Twenty li further east is Mount Ku. There is a beast here called the shangao. It is shaped like a pig and as red as cinnabar fire, and it is given to cursing. On its heights there is a tree called the huangji. Its flowers are yellow and its leaves round, and its fruit is like the orchid. Wear it and one does not conceive. There is a plant here with round leaves and no stalk, with red flowers and no fruit. It is called the wutiao, and wearing it keeps goiter from growing.
又東二十七里,曰堵山,神天愚居之,是多怪風雨。其上有木焉,名曰天楄,方莖而葵狀,服之不㖶。
Twenty seven li further east is Mount Du. The god Tianyu dwells there, and there are many strange winds and rains. On its heights there is a tree called the tianpian. It has a square stalk and the shape of a mallow, and wearing it keeps the throat from choking.
又東五十二里,曰放皋之山。明水出焉。南流注于伊水,其中多蒼玉。有木焉,其葉如槐,黃華而不實,其名曰蒙木,服之不惑。有獸焉,其狀如蜂,枝尾而反舌,善呼,其名曰文文。
Fifty two li further east is Mount Fanggao. The Ming River rises here and flows south into the Yi River, and in its waters there is much blue jade. There is a tree here whose leaves are like the pagoda tree's. Its flowers are yellow and it bears no fruit, and it is called the mengmu. Wear it and one is not deluded. There is a beast here shaped like a bee, with a forked tail and a tongue turned back. It calls out well, and it is called the wenwen.
又東五十七里,曰大𩇵之山,多㻬琈之玉,多麋玉。有草焉,其狀葉如榆,方莖而蒼傷,其名曰牛傷,其根蒼文,服者不厥,可以禦兵。其陽狂水出焉,西南流注于伊水,其中多三足龜,食者無大疾,可以已腫。
Fifty seven li further east is Mount Dagu. There is much tufu jade and much mi jade. There is a plant here whose leaves are like the elm's, with a square stalk and blue thorns. It is called the niushang, and its root has blue markings. One who wears it does not fall down, and it can ward off weapons. The Kuang River rises on its sunny side and flows southwest into the Yi River. In its waters there are many three footed turtles. One who eats them has no great sickness, and they can cure swelling.
又東七十里,曰半石之山,其上有草焉,生而秀,其高丈餘,赤葉黃華,華而不實,其名曰嘉榮,服之者不霆。來需之水出于其陽,而西流注于伊水,其中多鯩魚,黑文,其狀如鮒,食者不睡。合水出于其陰,而北流注于洛,多鰧魚,狀如鱖,居逵,蒼文赤尾,食者不癰,可以為瘻。
Seventy li further east is Mount Banshi. On its heights there is a plant that puts out ears as it grows, more than ten feet high. Its leaves are red and its flowers yellow, and it flowers but bears no fruit. It is called the jiarong, and one who wears it is not struck by thunder. The Laixu River rises on its sunny side and flows west into the Yi River. In its waters there are many lun fish, with black markings and shaped like a crucian carp. One who eats them does not grow sleepy. The He River rises on its shaded side and flows north into the Luo. There are many teng fish, shaped like the mandarin fish. They live where the ways meet, with blue markings and a red tail. One who eats them does not get carbuncles, and they can cure sores.
又東五十里,曰少室之山,百草木成囷。其上有木焉,其名曰帝休,葉狀如楊,其枝五衢,黃華黑實,服者不怒。其上多玉,其下多鐵。休水出焉,而北流注于洛,其中多䱱魚,狀如𥂕蜼而長距,足白而對,食者無蠱疾,可以禦兵。
Fifty li further east is Mount Shaoshi. The hundred plants and trees grow thick as a granary. On its heights there is a tree called the dixiu. Its leaves are shaped like the willow's, its branches spread five ways, its flowers are yellow and its fruit black. One who wears it does not grow angry. On its heights there is much jade, and below there is much iron. The Xiu River rises here and flows north into the Luo. In its waters there are many ti fish, shaped like a monkey but with long spurs. Their feet are white and set facing one another. One who eats them is not struck by gu sickness, and they can ward off weapons.
又東三十里,曰泰室之山。其上有木焉,葉狀如棃而赤理,其名曰栯木,服者不妒。有草焉,其狀如𦬸,白華黑實,澤如蘡薁,其名曰䔄草,服之不眯。上多美石。
Thirty li further east is Mount Taishi. On its heights there is a tree whose leaves are shaped like the pear's, with red grain. It is called the youmu, and one who wears it does not feel envy. There is a plant here shaped like a radish, with white flowers and black fruit. It has a gloss like the wild grape, and it is called the yao plant. Wear it and one is not troubled by nightmares. Above there are many fine stones.
又北三十里,曰講山,其上多玉,多柘,多柏。有木焉,名曰帝屋,葉狀如椒,反傷赤實,可以禦凶。
Thirty li further north is Mount Jiang. On its heights there is much jade, many mountain mulberries and many cypresses. There is a tree here called the diwu. Its leaves are shaped like the prickly ash's, it has thorns turned backward, and its fruit is red. It can ward off evil.
又北三十里,曰嬰梁之山,上多蒼玉,錞于玄石。
Thirty li further north is Mount Yingliang. Above there is much blue jade, and it sits upon black stone.
又東三十里,曰浮戲之山。有木焉,葉狀如樗而赤實,名曰亢木,食之不蠱,汜水出焉,而北流注于河。其東有谷,因名曰蛇谷,上多少辛。
Thirty li further east is Mount Fuxi. There is a tree here whose leaves are shaped like the ailanthus's and whose fruit is red. It is called the kangmu, and one who eats it is not struck by gu poison. The Si River rises here and flows north into the Yellow River. To its east there is a valley, and for this reason it is called the Snake Valley. Above there is much xixin.
又東四十里,曰少陘之山。有草焉,名曰𦱌草,葉狀如葵,而赤莖白華,實如蘡薁,食之不愚。器難之水出焉,而北流注于役水。
Forty li further east is Mount Shaoxing. There is a plant here called the gang plant. Its leaves are shaped like the mallow's, its stalk is red and its flowers white, and its fruit is like the wild grape. Eat it and one is not foolish. The Qinan River rises here and flows north into the Yi (役) River.
又東南十里,曰太山。有草焉,名曰棃,其葉狀如荻而赤華,可以已疽。太水出于其陽,而東南注于役水;承水出于其陰,而東北流注于役。
Ten li further southeast is Mount Tai. There is a plant here called the li. Its leaves are shaped like the reed's and its flowers are red, and it can cure abscesses. The Tai River rises on its sunny side and flows southeast into the Yi (役) River, and the Cheng River rises on its shaded side and flows northeast into the Yi (役).
又東二十里,曰末山,上多赤金。末水出焉,北流注于役。
Twenty li further east is Mount Mo. Above there is much red metal. The Mo River rises here and flows north into the Yi (役).
又東二十五里,曰役山,上多白金,多鐵。役水出焉,北流注于河。
Twenty five li further east is Mount Yi (役). Above there is much white metal and much iron. The Yi (役) River rises here and flows north into the Yellow River.
又東三十五里,曰敏山。上有木焉,其狀如荊,白華而赤實,名曰葪柏,服之不寒。其陽多㻬琈之玉。
Thirty five li further east is Mount Min. Above there is a tree shaped like the thorn tree, with white flowers and red fruit. It is called the jibai, and one who wears it does not feel cold. On its sunny side there is much tufu jade.
又東三十里,曰大騩之山,其陰多鐵、美玉、青堊。有草焉,其狀如蓍而毛,青華而白實,其名曰𦵧,服之不夭,可以為腹病。
Thirty li further east is Mount Dagui. On its shaded side there is much iron, much fine jade and much green clay. There is a plant here shaped like the yarrow but hairy, with blue flowers and white fruit. It is called the lang, and one who wears it does not die young, and it can cure sickness of the belly.
凡苦山之首,自休輿之山至于大騩之山,凡十有九山,千一百八十四里。其十六神者,皆豕身而人面。其祠:毛牷用一羊羞,嬰用一藻玉瘞。苦山、少室、太室皆冢也,其祠之:太牢之具,嬰以吉玉。其神狀皆人面而三首。其餘屬皆豕身人面也。
In all, the head of the Kushan range runs from Mount Xiuyu to Mount Dagui, nineteen mountains in all, one thousand one hundred and eighty four li. Sixteen of the gods there all have the body of a pig and the face of a man. For the sacrifice one sheep, whole in coat and sound of body, is offered, and for the ying one zao jade is buried. Mount Ku, Mount Shaoshi and Mount Taishi are all chief mountains. For their sacrifice the furnishings of the great offering are used, and the ying is made with auspicious jade. Those gods are all shaped with the face of a man and three heads. The rest that belong to them all have the body of a pig and the face of a man.
