Twelfth Guide to the Central Mountains中次十二經
《中次十二經》洞庭山之首,曰篇遇之山,無草木,多黃金。
In the Zhong ci shi'er jing, the head of the Dongting range is Mount Pianyu. There is no grass or trees, and much yellow gold.
又東南五十里,曰雲山,無草木。有桂竹,甚毒,傷人必死。其上多黃金,其下多㻬琈之玉。
Fifty li further southeast lies Mount Yun. There is no grass or trees. There is gui bamboo here, so poisonous that anyone it wounds is sure to die. On its heights there is much yellow gold, and below much tufu jade.
又東南一百三十里,曰龜山,其木多榖柞椆椐,其上多黃金,其下多青雄黃,多扶竹。
A hundred and thirty li further southeast lies Mount Gui. Its trees are mostly paper mulberry, oak, chou and ju. On its heights there is much yellow gold, and below much green realgar and much fu bamboo.
又東七十里,曰丙山,多筀竹,多黃金銅鐵,無木。
Seventy li further east lies Mount Bing. There is much gui bamboo, much yellow gold, copper and iron, and no trees.
又東南五十里,曰風伯之山,其上多金玉,其下多痠石、文石,多鐵,其木多柳杻檀楮。其東有林焉,名曰莽浮之林,多美木鳥獸。
Fifty li further southeast lies Mount Fengbo. On its heights there is much gold and jade, and below much suan stone and patterned stone, with much iron. Its trees are mostly willow, niu, birch and paper mulberry. To the east of it there is a forest called the forest of Mangfu, with many fine trees, birds and beasts.
又東一百五十里,曰夫夫之山,其上多黃金,其下多青雄黃,其木多桑楮,其草多竹、雞鼓。神于兒居之,其狀人身而身操兩蛇,常遊于江淵,出入有光。
A hundred and fifty li further east lies Mount Fufu. On its heights there is much yellow gold, and below much green realgar. Its trees are mostly mulberry and paper mulberry, and its plants are mostly bamboo and jigu. The god Yu'er dwells there. He has the body of a man and holds two snakes, and he roams always in the pools of the Yangtze, and light comes from him as he goes in and out.
又東南一百二十里,曰洞庭之山。其上多黃金,其下多銀鐵,其木多柤棃橘櫾,其草多葌、蘼蕪、芍藥、芎藭。帝之二女居之,是常遊于江淵。澧沅之風,交瀟湘之淵,是在九江之閒,出入必以飄風暴雨。是多怪神,狀如人而載蛇,左右手操蛇。多怪鳥。
A hundred and twenty li further southeast lies Mount Dongting. On its heights there is much yellow gold, and below much silver and iron. Its trees are mostly hawthorn, pear, orange and pomelo, and its plants are mostly jian grass, miwu, peony and xiongqiong. The two daughters of the High God dwell there, and they roam always in the pools of the Yangtze. The winds of the Li and the Yuan meet at the pools of the Xiao and the Xiang, and this place lies between the Nine Rivers. Whenever they come and go, whirlwinds and sudden rain arise. There are many strange gods here, shaped like men, bearing snakes on their heads and holding snakes in their left and right hands. There are many strange birds.
又東南一百八十里,曰暴山。其木多椶枏荊𦬊竹箭䉋箘,其是多黃金玉,其下多文石鐵,其獸多麋鹿𪊨就。
A hundred and eighty li further southeast lies Mount Bao. Its trees are mostly palm, nanmu, thorn trees, gou, small bamboo, mi bamboo and jun bamboo. On its heights there is much yellow gold and jade, and below much patterned stone and iron. Its beasts are mostly river deer, deer, gui and jiu.
又東南二百里,曰即公之山,其上多黃金,其下多㻬琈之玉,其木多柳杻檀桑。有獸焉,其狀如龜,而白身赤首,名曰蛫,是可以禦火。
Two hundred li further southeast lies Mount Jigong. On its heights there is much yellow gold, and below much tufu jade. Its trees are mostly willow, niu, birch and mulberry. There is a beast here shaped like a turtle, with a white body and a red head. It is called gui, and it can ward off fire.
又東南一百五十九里,有堯山,其陰多黃堊,其陽多黃金,其木多荊𦬊柳檀,其草多藷藇𦬸。
A hundred and fifty-nine li further southeast lies Mount Yao. On its shaded side there is much yellow clay, and on its sunny side much yellow gold. Its trees are mostly thorn trees, gou, willow and birch, and its plants are mostly yam and radish.
又東南一百里,曰江浮之山,其上多銀砥礪,無草木,其獸多豕鹿。
A hundred li further southeast lies Mount Jiangfu. On its heights there is much silver and whetstone, there is no grass or trees, and its beasts are mostly pigs and deer.
又東二百里,曰真陵之山,其上多黃金,其下多玉,其木多榖柞柳杻,其草多榮草。
Two hundred li further east lies Mount Zhenling. On its heights there is much yellow gold, and below much jade. Its trees are mostly paper mulberry, oak, willow and niu, and its plants are mostly rongcao.
又東南一百二十里,曰陽帝之山,多美銅,其木多橿杻檿楮,其獸多麢麝。
A hundred and twenty li further southeast lies Mount Yangdi. There is much fine copper. Its trees are mostly jiang, niu, mountain mulberry and paper mulberry, and its beasts are mostly ling antelopes and musk deer.
又南九十里,曰柴桑之山,其上多銀,其下多碧,多泠石、赭,其木多柳𦬊楮桑,其獸多麋鹿,多白蛇飛蛇。
Ninety li further south lies Mount Chaisang. On its heights there is much silver, and below much bi, with much ling stone and red earth. Its trees are mostly willow, gou, paper mulberry and mulberry, its beasts are mostly river deer and deer, and there are many white snakes and flying snakes.
又東二百三十里,曰榮余之山,其上多銅;其下多銀,其木多柳𦬊,其蟲多怪蛇怪蟲。
Two hundred and thirty li further east lies Mount Rongyu. On its heights there is much copper, and below much silver. Its trees are mostly willow and gou, and its creeping things are mostly strange snakes and strange insects.
凡洞庭山之首,自篇遇之山至于榮余之山,凡十五山,二千八百里。其神狀皆鳥身而龍首。其祠:毛用一雄雞、一牝豚刏,糈用稌。凡夫夫之山、即公之山、堯山、陽帝之山皆冢也,其祠:皆肆瘞,祈用酒,毛用少牢,嬰毛一吉玉。洞庭、榮余山神也,其祠:皆肆瘞,祈酒太牢祠,嬰用圭璧十五,五采惠之。
In all, the head of the Dongting range runs from Mount Pianyu to Mount Rongyu, fifteen mountains in all, two thousand eight hundred li. The gods there all have the body of a bird and the head of a dragon. The rite of sacrifice to them: one cock whole in its hair and one sow are cut and their blood offered, and glutinous rice is used as the offering rice. Mount Fufu, Mount Jigong, Mount Yao and Mount Yangdi are all chief mountains. The rite for them: in each the offerings are laid out and buried, wine is used in prayer, the lesser offering is used whole in its hair, and for the hanging offering one victim whole in its hair and one auspicious jade are used. Mount Dongting and Mount Rongyu are places where gods dwell. The rite for them: in each the offerings are laid out and buried, wine is prayed with and the great offering is sacrificed, and for the hanging offering fifteen gui tablets and bi discs are used, adorned in the five colors.
右中經之山,大凡百九十七山,二萬一千三百七十一里。
The above are the mountains of the Central Guide, one hundred and ninety-seven mountains in all, twenty-one thousand three hundred and seventy-one li.

In all, the famed mountains under heaven number five thousand three hundred and seventy, and the land they take up comes to sixty-four thousand and fifty-six li.
