Eleventh Guide to the Central Mountains中次十一經
《中次十一經》荊山之首,曰翼望之山。湍水出焉,東流注于濟;貺水出焉,東南流注于漢,其中多蛟。其上多松柏,其下多漆梓,其陽多赤金,其陰多珉。
In the Zhong ci shiyi jing, the head of the Jing range is Mount Yiwang. The Tuan River rises here and flows east into the Ji; the Kuang River rises here and flows southeast into the Han, and in its waters there are many jiao dragons. On its heights there are many pines and cypresses, below many lacquer trees and catalpas, on its sunny side much red metal, and on its shaded side much jade-stone.
又東北一百五十里,曰朝歌之山。潕水出焉,東南流注于滎,其中多人魚。其上多梓枏,其獸多麢麋。有草焉,名曰莽草,可以毒魚。
A hundred and fifty li further northeast lies Mount Zhaoge. The Wu River rises here and flows southeast into the Ying, and in its waters there are many human-fish. On its heights there are many catalpas and nanmu, and its beasts are mostly ling antelopes and river deer. There is a plant here called mangcao, and it can poison fish.
又東南二百里,曰帝囷之山,其陽多㻬琈之玉,其陰多鐵。帝囷之水出于其上,潛于其下,多鳴蛇。
Two hundred li further southeast lies Mount Diqun. On its sunny side there is much tufu jade, and on its shaded side much iron. The Diqun River rises on its heights and sinks away below it. There are many mingshe snakes.
又東南五十里,曰視山,其上多韭。有井焉,名曰天井,夏有水,冬竭。其上多桑,多美堊金玉。
Fifty li further southeast lies Mount Shi. On its heights there are many chives. There is a well here called Tianjing. In summer it holds water, and in winter it runs dry. On its heights there are many mulberries, and much fine white clay, gold and jade.
又東南二百里,曰前山,其木多櫧,多柏,其陽多金,其陰多赭。
Two hundred li further southeast lies Mount Qian. Its trees are mostly evergreen oak, with many cypresses. On its sunny side there is much gold, and on its shaded side much red earth.
又東南三百里,曰豐山。有獸焉,其狀如猨,赤目,赤喙、黃身,名曰雍和,見則國有大恐。神耕父處之,常遊清泠之淵,出入有光,見則其國為敗。有九鍾焉,是知霜鳴。其上多金,其下多榖柞杻橿。
Three hundred li further southeast lies Mount Feng. There is a beast here shaped like a monkey, with red eyes, a red beak and a yellow body. It is called yonghe, and when it appears there is great fear in the state. The god Gengfu dwells there. He roams always in the pool of Qingling, and light comes from him as he goes in and out. When he appears, that state is brought to ruin. There are nine bells here, and they know when frost falls and ring. On its heights there is much gold, and below many paper mulberries, oaks, niu and jiang.
又東北八百里,曰兔牀之山,其陽多鐵,其木多藷芧,其草多雞穀,其本如雞卵,其味酸甘,食者利于人。
Eight hundred li further northeast lies Mount Tuchuang. On its sunny side there is much iron, and its trees are mostly yam and acorn oak. Its plants are mostly jigu, whose root is like a hen's egg and whose taste is sour and sweet. Eating it benefits a person.
又東六十里,曰皮山,多堊,多赭,其木多松柏。
Sixty li further east lies Mount Pi. There is much white clay and much red earth, and its trees are mostly pine and cypress.
又東六十里,曰瑤碧之山,其木多梓枏,其陰多青雘,其陽多白金。有鳥焉,其狀如雉,恒食蜚,名曰鴆。
Sixty li further east lies Mount Yaobi. Its trees are mostly catalpa and nanmu, on its shaded side there is much qinghuo, and on its sunny side much white metal. There is a bird here shaped like a pheasant that eats weevils always. It is called zhen.
又東四十里,曰支離之山。濟水出焉,南流注于漢。有鳥焉,其名曰嬰勺,其狀如鵲,赤目、赤喙、白身,其尾若勺,其鳴自呼。多㸲牛,多羬羊。
Forty li further east lies Mount Zhili. The Ji River rises here and flows south into the Han. There is a bird here called yingshao. It is shaped like a magpie, with red eyes, a red beak and a white body, and its tail is like a ladle. Its cry is the calling of its own name. There are many zuo oxen and many han sheep.
又東北五十里,曰祑𥮐之山,其上多松柏机桓。
Fifty li further northeast lies Mount Zhizhu. On its heights there are many pines, cypresses, ji trees and soapberries.
又西北一百里,曰堇理之山,其上多松柏,多美梓;其陰多丹雘,多金;其獸多豹虎。有鳥焉,其狀如鵲,青身白喙,白目白尾,名曰青耕,可以禦疫,其鳴自叫。
A hundred li further northwest lies Mount Jinli. On its heights there are many pines and cypresses, and many fine catalpas. On its shaded side there is much danhuo and much gold, and its beasts are mostly leopards and tigers. There is a bird here shaped like a magpie, with a green body, a white beak, white eyes and a white tail. It is called qinggeng, and it can ward off plague. Its cry is the calling of its own name.
又東南三十里,曰依軲之山,其上多杻橿,多苴。有獸焉,其狀如犬,虎爪有甲,其名曰獜,善駚𤘝,食者不風。
Thirty li further southeast lies Mount Yigu. On its heights there are many niu and jiang, and many xylosma. There is a beast here shaped like a dog, with the claws of a tiger and a shell. It is called lin, and it leaps well. One who eats it does not suffer wind sickness.
又東南三十五里,曰即谷之山,多美玉,多玄豹,多閭麈,多麢㚟。其陽多珉,其陰多青雘。
Thirty-five li further southeast lies Mount Jigu. There is much fine jade, many black leopards, many wild asses and elk, and many ling antelopes and zhuo. On its sunny side there is much jade-stone, and on its shaded side much qinghuo.
又東南四十里,曰雞山,其上多美梓,多桑,其草多韭。
Forty li further southeast lies Mount Ji. On its heights there are many fine catalpas and many mulberries, and its plants are mostly chives.
又東南五十里,曰高前之山,其上有水焉,甚寒而清,帝臺之漿也,飲之者不心痛。其上有金,其下有赭。
Fifty li further southeast lies Mount Gaoqian. On its heights there is water, very cold and clear. It is the drink of Ditai, and one who drinks it suffers no pain of the heart. On its heights there is gold, and below there is red earth.
又東南三十里,曰遊戲之山,多杻橿榖,多玉,多封石。
Thirty li further southeast lies Mount Youxi. There are many niu, jiang and paper mulberries, much jade, and much fengshi stone.
又東南三十五里,曰從山,其上多松柏,其下多竹。從水出于其上,潛于其下,其中多三足鼈,枝尾,食之無蠱疾。
Thirty-five li further southeast lies Mount Cong. On its heights there are many pines and cypresses, and below much bamboo. The Cong River rises on its heights and sinks away below it. In its waters there are many three-footed turtles with forked tails. One who eats them does not fall to the gu sickness.
又東南三十里,曰嬰䃌之山,其上多松柏,其下多梓櫄。
Thirty li further southeast lies Mount Yingyin. On its heights there are many pines and cypresses, and below many catalpas and chun trees.
又東南三十里,曰畢山。帝苑之水出焉,東北流注于視,其中多水玉,多蛟。其上多㻬琈之玉。
Thirty li further southeast lies Mount Bi. The Diyuan River rises here and flows northeast into the Shi. In its waters there is much crystal and there are many jiao dragons. On its heights there is much tufu jade.
又東南二十里,曰樂馬之山。有獸焉,其狀如彙,赤如丹火,其名曰𤟑,見則其國大疫。
Twenty li further southeast lies Mount Lema. There is a beast here shaped like a hedgehog, as red as cinnabar fire. It is called xie, and when it appears a great plague comes upon that state.
又東南二十五里,曰葴山,視水出焉,東南流注于汝水,其中多人魚,多蛟,多頡。
Twenty-five li further southeast lies Mount Zhen. The Shi River rises here and flows southeast into the Ru River. In its waters there are many human-fish, many jiao dragons and many xie.
又東四十里,曰嬰山,其下多青雘,其上多金玉。
Forty li further east lies Mount Ying. Below it there is much qinghuo, and on its heights much gold and jade.
又東三十里,曰虎首之山,多苴椆椐。
Thirty li further east lies Mount Hushou. There are many xylosma, chou and ju.
又東二十里,曰嬰侯之山,其上多封石,其下多赤錫。
Twenty li further east lies Mount Yinghou. On its heights there is much fengshi stone, and below much red tin.
又東五十里,曰大孰之山。殺水出焉,東北流注于視水,其中多白堊。
Fifty li further east lies Mount Dashu. The Sha River rises here and flows northeast into the Shi River. In its waters there is much white clay.
又東四十里,曰卑山,其上多桃李苴梓,多纍。
Forty li further east lies Mount Bei. On its heights there are many peaches, plums, xylosma and catalpas, and much wisteria.
又東三十里,曰倚帝之山,其上多玉,其下多金。有獸焉,狀如鼣鼠,白耳白喙,名曰狙如,見則其國有大兵。
Thirty li further east lies Mount Yidi. On its heights there is much jade, and below much gold. There is a beast here shaped like a fei rat, with white ears and a white beak. It is called juru, and when it appears a great army arises in that state.
又東三十里,曰鯢山,鯢水出于其上,潛于其下,其中多美堊。其上多金,其下多青雘。
Thirty li further east lies Mount Ni. The Ni River rises on its heights and sinks away below it. In its waters there is much fine white clay. On its heights there is much gold, and below much qinghuo.
又東三十里,曰雅山。澧水出焉,東流注于視水,其中多大魚。其上多美桑,其下多苴,多赤金。
Thirty li further east lies Mount Ya. The Li River rises here and flows east into the Shi River, and in its waters there are many large fish. On its heights there are many fine mulberries, and below many xylosma and much red metal.
又東五十五里,曰宣山。淪水出焉,東南流注于視水,其中多蛟。其上有桑焉,大五十尺,其枝四衢,其葉大尺餘,赤理黃華青柎,名曰帝女之桑。
Fifty-five li further east lies Mount Xuan. The Lun River rises here and flows southeast into the Shi River, and in its waters there are many jiao dragons. On its heights there is a mulberry fifty feet around, its branches spreading four ways, its leaves more than a foot across. Its grain is red, its flowers yellow, its calyx green. It is called the mulberry of the High God's daughter.
又東四十五里,曰衡山,其上多青雘,多桑,其鳥多鸜鵒。
Forty-five li further east lies Mount Heng. On its heights there is much qinghuo and many mulberries, and its birds are mostly mynas.
又東四十里,曰豐山,其上多封石,其木多桑,多羊桃,狀如桃而方莖,可以為皮張。
Forty li further east lies Mount Feng. On its heights there is much fengshi stone, its trees are mostly mulberry, and there is much hardy kiwi. It is shaped like a peach with a square stalk, and it can be used in dressing hides.
又東七十里,曰嫗山,其上多美玉,其下多金,其草多雞穀。
Seventy li further east lies Mount Yu. On its heights there is much fine jade, below much gold, and its plants are mostly jigu.
又東三十里,曰鮮山,其木多楢杻苴,其草多虋冬,其陽多金,其陰多鐵。有獸焉,其狀如膜犬,赤喙、赤目、白尾,見則其邑有火,名曰𤝻即。
Thirty li further east lies Mount Xian. Its trees are mostly oak, niu and xylosma, and its plants are mostly mendong. On its sunny side there is much gold, and on its shaded side much iron. There is a beast here shaped like a mo dog, with a red beak, red eyes and a white tail. When it appears there is fire in that town, and it is called yiji.
又東三十里,曰章山,其陽多金,其陰多美石。臯水出焉,東流注于豐水,其中多脃石。
Thirty li further east lies Mount Zhang. On its sunny side there is much gold, and on its shaded side much fine stone. The Gao River rises here and flows east into the Feng River, and in its waters there is much crumbling stone.
又東二十五里,曰大支之山,其陽多金,其木多榖柞,無草木。
Twenty-five li further east lies Mount Dazhi. On its sunny side there is much gold, and its trees are mostly paper mulberry and oak. There is no grass or trees.
又東五十里,曰區吳之山,其木多苴。
Fifty li further east lies Mount Ouwu. Its trees are mostly xylosma.
又東五十里,曰聲匈之山,其木多榖,多玉,上多封石。
Fifty li further east lies Mount Shengxiong. Its trees are mostly paper mulberry, there is much jade, and on its heights much fengshi stone.
又東五十里,曰大騩之山,其陽多赤金,其陰多砥石。
Fifty li further east lies Mount Dagui. On its sunny side there is much red metal, and on its shaded side much whetstone.
又東十里,曰踵臼之山,無草木。
Ten li further east lies Mount Zhongjiu. There is no grass or trees.
又東北七十里,曰歷石之山,其木多荊𦬊,其陽多黃金,其陰多砥石。有獸焉,其狀如貍而白首虎爪,名曰梁渠,見則其國有大兵。
Seventy li further northeast lies Mount Lishi. Its trees are mostly thorn trees and gou, on its sunny side there is much yellow gold, and on its shaded side much whetstone. There is a beast here shaped like a wildcat, but with a white head and the claws of a tiger. It is called liangqu, and when it appears a great army arises in that state.
又東南一百里,曰求山。求水出于其上,潛于其下,中有美赭。其木多苴,多䉋。其陽多金,其陰多鐵。
A hundred li further southeast lies Mount Qiu. The Qiu River rises on its heights and sinks away below it, and within it there is fine red earth. Its trees are mostly xylosma, with much mi bamboo. On its sunny side there is much gold, and on its shaded side much iron.
又東二百里,曰丑陽之山,其上多椆椐。有鳥焉,其狀如烏而赤足,名曰䳅鵌,可以禦火。
Two hundred li further east lies Mount Chouyang. On its heights there are many chou and ju. There is a bird here shaped like a crow but with red feet. It is called yuyu, and it can ward off fire.
又東三百里,曰奧山,其上多柏杻橿,其陽多瀁琈之玉。奧水出焉,東流注于視水。
Three hundred li further east lies Mount Ao. On its heights there are many cypresses, niu and jiang, and on its sunny side much tufu jade. The Ao River rises here and flows east into the Shi River.
又東三十五里,曰服山,其木多苴,其上多封石,其下多赤錫。
Thirty-five li further east lies Mount Fu. Its trees are mostly xylosma, on its heights there is much fengshi stone, and below much red tin.
又東百十里,曰杳山,其上多嘉榮草,多金玉。
A hundred and ten li further east lies Mount Yao. On its heights there is much jiarong grass, and much gold and jade.
又東三百五十里,曰几山,其木多楢檀杻,其草多香。有獸焉,其狀如彘,黃身、白頭、白尾,名曰聞𧲂,見則天下大風。
Three hundred and fifty li further east lies Mount Ji. Its trees are mostly oak, birch and niu, and its plants are mostly fragrant ones. There is a beast here shaped like a pig, with a yellow body, a white head and a white tail. It is called wenlin, and when it appears a great wind blows over all under heaven.
凡荊山之首,自翼望之山至于几山,凡四十八山,三千七百三十二里。其神狀皆彘身人首。其祠:毛用一雄雞祈,瘞用一珪,糈用五種之精。禾山,帝也,其祠:太牢之具,羞瘞倒毛;用一璧,牛無常。堵山、玉山,冢也,皆倒祠,羞毛少牢,嬰毛吉玉。
In all, the head of the Jing range runs from Mount Yiwang to Mount Ji, forty-eight mountains in all, three thousand seven hundred and thirty-two li. The gods there all have the body of a pig and the head of a man. The rite of sacrifice to them: prayer is made with one cock whole in its hair, one gui tablet is buried, and grain of the five kinds is used as the offering rice. Mount He is the mountain of the High God. The rite for it: the great offering is set out and presented, and the victim is buried head downward; one bi disc is used, and the ox is not fixed. Mount Du and Mount Yu are chief mountains. Both are sacrificed to head downward, the lesser offering is presented whole in its hair, and for the hanging offering a victim whole in its hair and auspicious jade are used.
