The Great Wilds: North大荒北經
東北海之外，大荒之中，河水之閒，附禺之山，帝顓頊與九嬪葬焉。爰有𩿨久、文貝、離俞、鸞鳥、鳳鳥、大物、小物。有青鳥、琅鳥、玄鳥、黄鳥、虎、豹、熊、羆、黄蛇、視肉、璿、瑰、瑶、碧，皆出于山。丘方圓三百里，丘南帝俊竹林在焉，大可為舟。竹南有赤澤水，名曰封淵。有三桑無枝。丘西有沈淵，顓頊所浴。
Beyond the northeastern sea, within the Great Wilds, between the waters of the Yellow River, there is Mount Fuyu, where Zhuanxu and his nine consorts are buried. Here there are jiujiu, patterned cowries, liyu, the luan bird, the phoenix, great creatures and small creatures. There are green birds, lang birds, black birds, yellow birds, tigers, leopards, bears, brown bears, yellow snakes, shirou, and xuan, gui, yao, and bi jades, and all of them come from the mountain. The hill is three hundred li around, and south of the hill is the bamboo grove of Dijun, whose stems are big enough to make boats. South of the bamboo there is a red marsh water, and it is called the Feng pool. There are three mulberry trees with no branches. West of the hill there is the Chen pool, where Zhuanxu bathed.
有胡不與之國，烈姓，黍食。
There is the land of Hubuyu. They are of the Lie clan and they eat millet.
大荒之中，有山名曰不咸，有肅慎氏之國。有蜚蛭，四翼。有蟲，獸首蛇身，名曰琴蟲。
Within the Great Wilds there is a mountain named Buxian, and there is the land of the Sushen clan. There are flying leeches with four wings. There is a creature with the head of a beast and the body of a snake, and it is called the qin insect.
有人名曰大人。有大人之國，釐姓，黍食。有大青蛇，黄頭，食麈。
There is a man called Daren. There is the land of Daren. They are of the Li clan and they eat millet. There is a great green snake with a yellow head, and it eats elk.
有榆山。有鯀攻程州之山。
There is Mount Yu. There is the mountain where Gun attacked Chengzhou.
大荒之中，有山名曰衡天。有先民之山。有槃木千里。
Within the Great Wilds there is a mountain named Hengtian. There is the mountain of Xianmin. There is a coiling tree a thousand li long.
有叔歜國，顓頊之子，黍食，使四鳥、虎、豹、熊、羆。有黒蟲如熊狀，名曰猎猎。
There is the land of Shuchu. They are the sons of Zhuanxu, they eat millet, and they drive four birds, tigers, leopards, bears, and brown bears. There is a black creature shaped like a bear, and it is called the lielie.
有北齊之國，姜姓，使虎、豹、熊、羆。
There is the land of Beiqi. They are of the Jiang clan, and they drive tigers, leopards, bears, and brown bears.
大荒之中，有山名曰先檻大逢之山，河濟所入，海北注焉。其西有山，名曰禹所積石。
Within the Great Wilds there is a mountain named Mount Xianjiandafeng. It is where the Yellow River and the Ji River go in, and the sea pours into it from the north. To its west there is a mountain, and it is called the place where Yu piled up stones.
有陽山者。有順山者，順水出焉。有始州之國，有丹山。
There is one called Mount Yang. There is one called Mount Shun, and the Shun River rises from it. There is the land of Shizhou, and there is Mount Dan.
有大澤方千里，羣鳥所解。
There is a great marsh a thousand li square, and it is where the flocks of birds moult.
有毛民之國，依姓，食黍，使四鳥。禹生均國，均國生役采，役采生修鞈，修鞈殺綽人。帝念之，潛為之國，是此毛民。
There is the land of Maomin. They are of the Yi clan, they eat millet, and they drive four birds. Yu fathered Junguo, Junguo fathered Yicai, Yicai fathered Xiuge, and Xiuge killed Chuoren. The High God took pity on him and made a land for him in secret, and these are the Maomin.
有儋耳之國，任姓，禺號子，食榖。北海之渚中，有神，人面鳥身，珥兩青蛇，踐兩赤蛇，名曰禺彊。
There is the land of Dan'er. They are of the Ren clan, they are the sons of Yuhao, and they eat grain. On a sandbank in the Northern Sea there is a god with a human face and the body of a bird. He wears two green snakes at his ears and treads on two red snakes, and he is called Yuqiang.
大荒之中，有山名曰北極天櫃，海外北注焉。有神，九首人面鳥身，名曰九鳳。又有神衘蛇操蛇，其狀虎首人身，四蹏長肘，名曰彊良。
Within the Great Wilds there is a mountain named Beijitiangui, and the waters beyond the sea pour into it from the north. There is a god with nine heads, a human face, and the body of a bird, and he is called Jiufeng. There is also a god who holds a snake in his mouth and grips a snake in his hands. He has the head of a tiger and the body of a man, four hooves, and long elbows, and he is called Qiangliang.
大荒之中，有山名曰成都載天。有人珥兩黄蛇，把兩黄蛇，名曰夸父。后土生信，信生夸父。夸父不量力，欲追日景，逮之于禺谷。將飲河而不足也，將走大澤，未至，死于此。應龍已殺蚩尤，又殺夸父，乃去南方處之，故南方多雨。
Within the Great Wilds there is a mountain named Chengduzaitian. There is a man who wears two yellow snakes at his ears and grips two yellow snakes, and he is called Kuafu. Houtu fathered Xin, and Xin fathered Kuafu. Kuafu did not measure his own strength. He wanted to chase the shadow of the sun, and he caught up with it at Yugu. He would have drunk the Yellow River, but it was not enough, and he set out to run to the great marsh. He did not reach it, and he died here. The Yinglong had already killed Chiyou, and he killed Kuafu as well. Then he went away and settled in the south, and that is why there is much rain in the south.
又有無腸之國，是任姓。無繼子，食魚。
There is also the land of Wuchang. They are of the Ren clan. They are the sons of Wuji, and they eat fish.
共工臣名曰相繇，九首蛇身，自環，食于九土。其所歍所尼，即為源澤，不辛乃苦，百獸莫能處。禹湮洪水，殺相繇，其血腥臭，不可生榖；其地多水，不可居也。禹湮之，三仞三沮，乃以為池，羣帝因是以為臺。在崑崙之北。
A vassal of Gonggong was called Xiangyao. He had nine heads and the body of a snake, and he coiled around himself and fed on the nine lands. Wherever he spat and wherever he rested became a swamp or a marsh, and the water was sharp or else bitter, so that none of the hundred beasts could live there. Yu dammed the flood and killed Xiangyao, and his blood stank so that no grain could grow. The land had much water, and no one could live there. Yu filled it in, but three times he filled three fathoms deep and three times it collapsed. So he made of it a pool, and the many high gods made of it a terrace. It lies north of Kunlun.
有岳之山，尋竹生焉。
There is Mount Yue, and the xun bamboo grows there.
大荒之中，有山名不句，海水北入焉。
Within the Great Wilds there is a mountain named Bugou, and the waters of the sea enter it from the north.
有係昆之山者，有共工之臺，射者不敢北鄉。有人衣青衣，名曰黄帝女魃。蚩尤作兵伐黄帝，黄帝乃令應龍攻之冀州之野。應龍畜水。蚩尤請風伯雨師，縱大風雨。黄帝乃下天女曰魃，雨止，遂殺蚩尤。魃不得復上，所居不雨。叔均言之帝，後置之赤水之北。叔均乃為田祖。魃時亡之，所欲逐之者，令曰：「神北行！」先除水道，决通溝瀆。
There is one called Mount Xikun, and there is the terrace of Gonggong. Archers do not dare to face north. There is one dressed in green clothes, and she is called Ba, the daughter of the Yellow Emperor. Chiyou made weapons and attacked the Yellow Emperor, and the Yellow Emperor ordered the Yinglong to fight him in the wilds of Jizhou. The Yinglong gathered up the waters. Chiyou called on Fengbo and Yushi, and they let loose a great wind and rain. Then the Yellow Emperor sent down the daughter of heaven called Ba, and the rain stopped, and at last they killed Chiyou. Ba could not go back up, and no rain fell where she lived. Shujun spoke of this to the High God, and afterward she was placed north of the Red River. Shujun then became the lord of the fields. Ba would slip away from that place at times, and those who wanted to drive her out would call out, "Spirit, go north!" First they clear the watercourses and open the ditches and channels.
有人方食魚，名曰深目民之國，昐姓，食魚。
There are people eating fish, and they are called the land of Shenmumin. They are of the Fen clan and they eat fish.
有鍾山者，有女子衣青衣，名曰赤水女子獻。
There is one called Mount Zhong, and there is a woman dressed in green clothes, and she is called Xian, the woman of the Red River.
大荒之中，有山名曰融父山，順水入焉。有人名曰犬戎。黄帝生苗龍，苗龍生融吾，融吾生弄明，弄明生白犬，白犬有牝牡，是為犬戎，肉食。有赤獸，馬狀，無首，名曰戎宣王尸。
Within the Great Wilds there is a mountain named Mount Rongfu, and the Shun River goes into it. There is a man called Quanrong. The Yellow Emperor fathered Miaolong, Miaolong fathered Rongwu, Rongwu fathered Nongming, and Nongming fathered Baiquan. Baiquan had a female and a male, and these became the Quanrong, and they eat meat. There is a red beast shaped like a horse and without a head, and it is called the corpse of the king Rongxuan.
有山名曰齊州之山、君山、𩰿山、鮮野山、魚山。
There are mountains called Mount Qizhou, Mount Jun, Mount Zan, Mount Xianye, and Mount Yu.
有人一目，當面中生。一曰是威姓，少昊之子，食黍。
There are people with one eye, and it is set in the middle of the face. One account says that they are of the Wei clan, that they are the sons of Shaohao, and that they eat millet.
有無繼民，無繼民任姓，無骨子，食氣、魚。
There are the Wujimin. The Wujimin are of the Ren clan. They are the sons of Wugu, and they eat air and fish.
西北海外，流沙之東，有國曰中䡢，顓頊之子，食黍。
Beyond the northwestern sea, east of the Liusha, there is a land called Zhongpian. They are the sons of Zhuanxu and they eat millet.
有國名曰賴丘。有犬戎國。有神，人面獸身，名曰犬戎。
There is a land named Laiqiu. There is the land of Quanrong. There is a god with a human face and the body of a beast, and he is called Quanrong.
西北海外，黒水之北，有人有翼，名曰苗民。顓頊生驩頭，驩頭生苗民，苗民釐姓，食肉。有山名曰章山。
Beyond the northwestern sea, north of the Black River, there are people with wings, and they are called the Miaomin. Zhuanxu fathered Huantou, and Huantou fathered the Miaomin. The Miaomin are of the Li clan and they eat meat. There is a mountain called Mount Zhang.
大荒之中，有衡石山、九陰山、灰野之山、泂野之山，上有赤樹，青葉赤華，名曰若木。
Within the Great Wilds there are Mount Hengshi, Mount Jiuyin, Mount Huiye, and Mount Jiongye. On top there is a red tree with green leaves and red flowers, and it is called the ruomu tree.
有牛黎之國。有人無骨，儋耳之子。
There is the land of Niuli. There are people without bones, and they are the sons of Dan'er.
西北海外，赤水之北，有章尾山。有神，人面蛇身而赤，直目正乘，其暝乃晦，其視乃明，不食不寢不息，風雨是謁。是燭九陰，是謂燭龍。
Beyond the northwestern sea, north of the Red River, there is Mount Zhangwei. There is a god with a human face and the body of a snake, and he is red. His eyes are set straight up and down. When he closes them it grows dark, and when he opens them it grows light. He does not eat, he does not sleep, and he does not breathe, and he calls up the wind and the rain. He lights the ninefold darkness, and he is called Zhulong.
