The Great Wilds: West大荒西經
西北海之外，大荒之隅，有山而不合，名曰不周，有兩黄獸守之。有水曰寒暑之水，水西有濕山，水東有幕山。有禹攻共工國山。
Beyond the northwestern sea, in a corner of the Great Wilds, there is a mountain that does not join together, and it is called Buzhou. Two yellow beasts guard it. There is a water called the water of Hanshu. West of the water there is Mount Shi, and east of the water there is Mount Mu. There is the mountain where Yu attacked the land of Gonggong.
有國名曰淑士，顓頊之子。
There is a land named Shushi, and its people are the sons of Zhuanxu.
有神十人，名曰女媧之腸，化為神，處栗廣之野，横道而處。
There are ten gods called the bowels of Nüwa. They changed into gods and settled in the wilds of Liguang, and they lie across the road.
有人名曰石夷，來風曰韋，處西北隅以司日月之長短。
There is a man named Shiyi, and the wind that comes is called Wei. He dwells in the northwestern corner and governs whether the sun and the moon are long or short.
有五采之鳥，有冠，名曰狂鳥。
There is a bird of five colors with a crest, and it is called the kuang bird.
有大澤之長山，有白民之國。
There is Mount Chang of the Great Marsh, and there is the land of Baimin.
西北海之外，赤水之東，有長脛之國。
Beyond the northwestern sea, east of the Red River, there is the land of Changjing.
有西周之國，姬姓，食榖。有人方耕，名曰叔均。帝俊生后稷，稷降以百榖。稷之弟曰台璽，生叔均。叔均是代其父及稷播百榖，始作耕。有赤國妻氏。有雙山。
There is the land of Xizhou. They are of the Ji clan and they eat grain. There is a man plowing a field, and he is called Shujun. Dijun fathered Houji, and Houji came down with the hundred grains. Houji's younger brother was called Taixi, and he fathered Shujun. Shujun took the place of his father and of Houji in sowing the hundred grains, and he was the first to make plowing. There is the land of Chi, of the Qi clan. There is Mount Shuang.
西海之外，大荒之中，有方山者，上有青樹，名曰柜格之松，日月所出入也。
Beyond the Western Sea, within the Great Wilds, there is one called Mount Fang. On top of it there is a green tree, and it is called the pine of Juge. It is where the sun and the moon come out and go in.
西北海之外，赤水之西，有天民之國，食榖，使四鳥。
Beyond the northwestern sea, west of the Red River, there is the land of Tianmin. They eat grain and drive four birds.
有北狄之國。黄帝之孫曰始均，始均生北狄。
There is the land of Beidi. The grandson of the Yellow Emperor was called Shijun, and Shijun fathered Beidi.
有芒山。有桂山。有榣山，其上有人，號曰太子長琴。顓頊生老童，老童生祝融，祝融生太子長琴，是處榣山，始作樂風。
There is Mount Mang. There is Mount Gui. There is Mount Yao, and on top of it there is a man called the crown prince Changqin. Zhuanxu fathered Laotong, Laotong fathered Zhurong, and Zhurong fathered the crown prince Changqin. He settled on Mount Yao and was the first to make the airs of music.
有五采鳥三名：一曰皇鳥，一曰鸞鳥，一曰鳳鳥。
There are birds of five colors with three names: one is called the huang bird, one the luan bird, and one the phoenix.
有蟲狀如菟，胷以後者裸不見，青如猨狀。
There is an insect shaped like a hare. From the chest back it is bare and cannot be seen, and it is green like an ape.
大荒之中，有山名曰豐沮玉門，日月所入。
Within the Great Wilds there is a mountain named Fengjuyumen. It is where the sun and the moon go in.
有靈山，巫咸、巫即、巫朌、巫彭、巫姑、巫真、巫禮、巫抵、巫謝、巫羅十巫，從此升降，百藥爰在。
There is Mount Ling. Wuxian, Wuji, Wufen, Wupeng, Wugu, Wuzhen, Wuli, Wudi, Wuxie, and Wuluo, ten shamans, go up and come down by it. The hundred medicines are there.
西有王母之山、壑山、海山。有沃民之國，沃民是處。沃之野，鳳鳥之卵是食，甘露是飲。凡其所欲，其味盡存。爰有甘華、甘柤、白栁、視肉、三騅、璇瑰、瑶碧、白木、琅玕、白丹、青丹，多銀鐵。鸞鳥自歌，鳳鳥自舞，爰有百獸，相群是處，是謂沃之野。
To the west there are the mountain of Wangmu, Mount He, and Mount Hai. There is the land of Womin, and the Womin dwell there. In the wilds of Wo they eat the eggs of the phoenix and drink the sweet dew. Whatever they desire, all its flavors are there. Here there are ganhua, ganzha, white willow, shirou, Sanzhui, xuangui, yaobi, white wood, langgan, white cinnabar, and green cinnabar, and there is much silver and iron. The luan bird sings of itself and the phoenix dances of itself. Here there are the hundred beasts, and they live together in herds. This is called the wilds of Wo.
有三青鳥，赤首黒目，一名曰大鵹，一名少鵹，一名曰青鳥。
There are three green birds with red heads and black eyes. One is called Dali, one Shaoli, and one the green bird.
有軒轅之臺，射者不敢西鄉，畏軒轅之臺。
There is the terrace of Xuanyuan. Archers do not dare to face west, for they fear the terrace of Xuanyuan.
大荒之中，有龍山，日月所入。
Within the Great Wilds there is Mount Long. It is where the sun and the moon go in.
有三澤水，名曰三淖，昆吾之所食也。
There are the waters of three marshes, and they are called Sannao. It is where Kunwu ate.
有人衣青，以袂蔽面，名曰女丑之尸。
There is one dressed in green who covers her face with a sleeve, and she is called the corpse of Nüchou.
有女子之國。
There is the land of women.
有桃山。有䖟山。有桂山。有于土山。
There is Mount Tao. There is Mount Meng. There is Mount Gui. There is Mount Yutu.
有丈夫之國。
There is the land of Zhangfu.
有弇州之山，五采之鳥仰天，名曰鳴鳥。爰有百樂歌儛之風。
There is Mount Yanzhou. A bird of five colors looks up to the sky there, and it is called the ming bird. Here there are the airs of the hundred kinds of music and of song and dance.
有軒轅之國。江山之南棲為吉。不壽者乃八百歲。
There is the land of Xuanyuan. To settle south of Jiangshan brings good fortune. Even those who do not live long live eight hundred years.
西海陼中，有神，人面鳥身，珥兩青蛇，踐兩赤蛇，名曰弇茲。
On a sandbank in the Western Sea there is a god with a human face and the body of a bird. He wears two green snakes at his ears and treads on two red snakes, and he is called Yanzi.
大荒之中，有山名曰日月山，天樞也。吴姖天門，日月所入。有神，人面無臂，兩足反屬于頭上，名曰嘘。顓頊生老童，老童生重及黎，帝令重獻上天，令黎印下地。下地是生噎，處于西極，以行日月星辰之行次。
Within the Great Wilds there is a mountain named Riyue, and it is the pivot of heaven. It is the heavenly gate of Wuju, where the sun and the moon go in. There is a god with a human face and no arms, and his two feet are turned back and joined on top of his head. He is called Xu. Zhuanxu fathered Laotong, and Laotong fathered Zhong and Li. The High God ordered Zhong to raise heaven up and ordered Li to press the earth down. Below on the earth Li fathered Ye, who dwells at the western limit and orders the course of the sun, the moon, and the stars.
有人反臂，名曰天虞。
There is a man whose arms are turned back, and he is called Tianyu.
有女子方浴月。帝俊妻常羲，生月十二，此始浴之。
There is a woman bathing the moons. Changxi, the wife of Dijun, gave birth to the twelve moons, and she was the first to bathe them.
有玄丹之山。有五色之鳥，人面有髮。爰有青鴍、黄鷔、青鳥、黄鳥，其所集者其國亡。
There is Mount Xuandan. There are birds of five colors with human faces and with hair. Here there are the qingwen, the huang'ao, the green bird, and the yellow bird, and the land where they gather will perish.
有池，名孟翼之攻顓頊之池。
There is a pool, and it is called the pool where Mengyi attacked Zhuanxu.
大荒之中，有山，名曰鏖鏊鉅，日月所入者。
Within the Great Wilds there is a mountain named Ao'aoju, and it is where the sun and the moon go in.
有獸，左右有首，名曰屏蓬。
There is a beast with a head on the left and a head on the right, and it is called Pingpeng.
有巫山者。有壑山者。有金門之山，有人名曰黄姖之尸。有比翼之鳥，有白鳥，青翼，黄尾，玄喙。有赤犬，名曰天犬，其所下者有兵。
There is one called Mount Wu. There is one called Mount He. There is Mount Jinmen, and there is a man called the corpse of Huangju. There is the biyi bird. There is a white bird with green wings, a yellow tail, and a black beak. There is a red dog called tianquan, and where it comes down there is war.
西海之南，流沙之濱，赤水之後，黒水之前，有大山，名曰崑崙之丘。有神，人面虎身，有文有尾，皆白，處之。其下有弱水之淵環之，其外有炎火之山，投物輒然。有人，戴勝，虎齒，有豹尾，穴處，名曰西王母。此山萬物盡有。
South of the Western Sea, on the shore of the Liusha, behind the Red River and before the Black River, there is a great mountain called the hill of Kunlun. There is a god with a human face and the body of a tiger, with markings and with a tail, and all of them are white, and he dwells there. Below it the pool of the Ruo River rings it round, and beyond that there is the mountain of flaming fire, and whatever is thrown in burns at once. There is one who wears a sheng, with the teeth of a tiger and the tail of a leopard, who dwells in a cave, and she is called Xiwangmu. On this mountain all the ten thousand things are found.
大荒之中，有山名曰常陽之山，日月所入。
Within the Great Wilds there is a mountain named Mount Changyang. It is where the sun and the moon go in.
有寒荒之國。有二人女祭、女薎。
There is the land of Hanhuang. There are two people, Nüji and Nümie.
有壽麻之國。南嶽娶州山女，名曰女虔。女虔生季格，季格生壽麻。壽麻正立無景，疾呼無響。爰有大暑，不可以往。
There is the land of Shouma. Nanyue took a daughter of Mount Zhou to wife, and she was called Nüqian. Nüqian bore Jige, and Jige fathered Shouma. When Shouma stands straight he casts no shadow, and when he calls out sharply there is no echo. Here there is great heat, and no one can go there.
有人無首，操戈盾立，名曰夏耕之尸。故成湯伐夏桀于章山，克之，斬耕厥前。耕既立，無首，走厥咎，乃降于巫山。
There is a man without a head who stands holding a dagger-axe and a shield, and he is called the corpse of Xiageng. Long ago Cheng Tang attacked Jie of Xia at Mount Zhang and defeated him, and he beheaded Geng before him. Geng rose up, but he had no head, and he ran away from his guilt and came down to Mount Wu.
有人名曰吴回，竒左，是無右臂。
There is a man named Wuhui. He has only his left side, and he has no right arm.
有蓋山之國。有樹，赤皮支幹，青葉，名曰朱木。
There is the land of Mount Gai. There is a tree whose bark and branches and trunk are red and whose leaves are green, and it is called the zhumu tree.
有一臂民。
There are the Yibi people.
大荒之中，有山名曰大荒之山，日月所入。有人焉三面，是顓頊之子，三面一臂，三面之人不死，是謂大荒之野。
Within the Great Wilds there is a mountain named the mountain of the Great Wilds. It is where the sun and the moon go in. There are people there with three faces, and they are the sons of Zhuanxu. They have three faces and one arm, and the people with three faces do not die. This is called the wilds of the Great Wilds.
西南海之外，赤水之南，流沙之西，有人珥兩青蛇，乗兩龍，名曰夏后開。開上三嬪于天，得九辯與九歌以下。此天穆之野，髙二千仞，開焉得始歌九招。
Beyond the southwestern sea, south of the Red River and west of the Liusha, there is a man who wears two green snakes at his ears and rides two dragons, and he is called Kai of the house of Xia. Kai went up to heaven three times as a guest, and he came down with the Jiubian and the Jiuge. This is the wilds of Tianmu, two thousand fathoms high, and it was here that Kai first sang the Jiuzhao.
有氐人之國。炎帝之孫名曰靈恝，靈恝生氐人，是能上下于天。
There is the land of Diren. The grandson of the Yan Emperor was named Lingjia, and Lingjia fathered the Diren, and they can go up to heaven and come down again.
有魚偏枯，名曰魚婦。顓頊死即復蘇。風道北来，天乃大水泉，蛇乃化為魚，是謂魚婦。顓頊死即復蘇。
There is a fish withered on one side, and it is called Yufu. Zhuanxu died and at once came back to life. When the wind came from the north, heaven poured down a great flood of water, and the snakes changed into fish. This is called Yufu. Zhuanxu died and at once came back to life.
有青鳥，身黄，赤足，六首，名曰𪇆鳥。
There is a green bird with a yellow body, red feet, and six heads, and it is called the yao bird.
有大巫山。有金之山。西南，大荒之隅，有偏句、常羊之山。
There is Mount Dawu. There is Mount Jin. In the southwestern corner of the Great Wilds there are Mount Pianju and Mount Changyang.
