Joseon 2 — The Two Generals Fall Out With Each Other朝鮮列傳 二
1Two Columns Go Forward, and Both Are Beaten
The Son of Heaven gathered men under sentence and sent them to strike Joseon. In the autumn of that year he sent the General of the Tower Ships, Yang Pu (楊僕), to cross the Bohai from Qi, and the General of the Left, Xun Zhi (荀彘), with fifty thousand troops to march out of Liaodong, and they were to punish Ugeo. Ugeo sent out troops and held the narrow places against them.
Duo (多), a troop commander under the General of the Left, led the Liaodong troops and charged ahead first. They were beaten and scattered, and Duo turned and fled, so he fell under the law and was beheaded.
The General of the Tower Ships led seven thousand troops of Qi and reached Wanggeom first. Ugeo was holding the city. He spied out that the tower-ship force was small, so he came out of the city at once and struck it, and the tower-ship force was beaten and scattered and fled. General Yang Pu lost his men and hid in the mountains for more than ten days. Little by little he sought out the scattered soldiers and gathered them again. The General of the Left struck the Joseon troops west of the Paesu, but he could not break through and go forward.
2The Crown Prince Comes as Far as the Paesu and Turns Back
The Son of Heaven, seeing that the two generals had gained nothing, sent Wei Shan (衛山) to go and reason with Ugeo, leaning on the might of the army. Ugeo saw the envoy, bowed his head to the ground, and made his apology. "I wished to surrender, but I feared the two generals would deceive me and kill me. Now that I have seen the tally of good faith, I ask to submit and surrender."
He sent the crown prince to go in and make the apology, offered five thousand horses, and undertook to send grain for the army as well. There were more than ten thousand men, and they bore arms. Just as they were about to cross the Paesu, the envoy and the General of the Left suspected a turn against them and said, "The crown prince has already submitted and surrendered. He ought to order his men to bear no arms." The crown prince for his part suspected that the envoy and the General of the Left meant to deceive and kill him, so in the end he did not cross the Paesu but led his men back again. Wei Shan returned and reported to the Son of Heaven, and the Son of Heaven put Wei Shan to death.
3They Surround the City, but for Months They Cannot Take It
The General of the Left broke the troops on the Paesu, then went forward and came beneath the city wall, and he surrounded its northwest. The tower ships also came and joined him, and took station south of the city. Ugeo then held the city fast, and for several months they could not bring it down.
4The Two Generals Fall Out, and the Man Sent to Set It Right Dies Too
The General of the Left had long been a Palace Attendant and enjoyed the emperor's favor. He led the troops of Yan and Dai, who were fierce, and riding on their victories his army had grown quite arrogant. The General of the Tower Ships led the troops of Qi. They had gone in by sea and had already suffered many defeats and deaths. Earlier he had fought Ugeo, and had been disgraced and had lost soldiers, so his soldiers were all afraid and the general was ashamed in his heart. Though he had Ugeo surrounded, he always kept a tally for peace at hand.
When the General of the Left pressed his attack, a great minister of Joseon secretly sent a man to make a private compact to surrender to the tower ships. They went back and forth in talk, but nothing was yet settled. Several times the General of the Left set a day to fight together with the tower ships, but the General of the Tower Ships, wishing to close his compact quickly, did not meet him. The General of the Left also sent men to seek an opening and bring Joseon to surrender, but Joseon would not, for its heart was inclined to the tower ships. For this reason the two generals did not get on with each other. In his heart the General of the Left held that the General of the Tower Ships bore the guilt of having lost his army before, and that now he was on private good terms with Joseon and still had not brought it to surrender, and he suspected him of a plan to turn traitor. But he did not dare to act.
The Son of Heaven said, "The generals are not equal to it. Earlier I sent Wei Shan to reason with Ugeo and bring him to surrender, and Ugeo sent his crown prince. But Wei Shan as envoy could not settle the matter, and his plans and the General of the Left's went astray of each other, so that in the end the compact was ruined. Now the two generals have the city surrounded, and again they are at odds. For this reason it has long gone undecided." He then sent Gongsun Sui (公孫遂), the Grand Administrator of Jinan, to go and set it right, with leave to deal with matters as the occasion required.
When Gongsun Sui arrived, the General of the Left said, "Joseon ought to have fallen long ago. That it has not fallen has a reason behind it." He told how the tower ships had set a day again and again and had not met him, and he laid out for Gongsun Sui everything he had long had in mind. He said, "If we leave things as they are and do not seize him, I fear it will be a great harm. It will not be the tower ships alone. He will also join with Joseon and wipe out our army."
Gongsun Sui thought so too. With his tally he summoned the General of the Tower Ships to come into the camp of the General of the Left to take counsel, and at once he ordered the men under the General of the Left to seize the General of the Tower Ships and take over his army. He reported this to the Son of Heaven, and the Son of Heaven put Gongsun Sui to death.
