Enmity and Estrangement
1It may well be called white heads returning to the same place
Sun Xiu already bore a grudge against Shi Chong for not giving him Lüzhu, and he resented Pan Yue as well for not having treated him with courtesy in the old days.
Later Sun Xiu became Director of the Secretariat. Pan Yue saw him within the Secretariat, and called out to him, "Director Sun, do you remember how we went about together in days gone by?"
Sun Xiu said, "I have hidden it away in the midst of my heart. On what day would I forget it?"
Pan Yue then knew for the first time that he would surely not escape.
Later they seized Shi Chong and Ouyang Jianshi, and on the same day they seized Pan Yue.
Shi Chong was sent to the marketplace first, and neither of them knew of the other.
When Pan Yue came after him, Shi Chong said to Pan Yue, "Anren, so you too have come to this?"
Pan Yue said, "It may well be called 'white heads returning to the same place.'"
In Pan Yue's poem in the Jingu ji it says, "I cast my lot and entrust it to a friend firm as stone; with white heads we return to the same place." And so it became a prophecy of his end.

Gan Bao's Jin ji says, "Shi Chong had a singing girl, Lüzhu, who was beautiful and skilled at the flute, and Sun Xiu sent a man to ask for her. Chong was at his other house below Beimang, and he had just climbed to the cool gallery and looked out over the clear water when the messenger told him of it. Chong brought out several tens of his maids and concubines and showed them to him, saying, 'Take your pick as you please.' The messenger said, 'What I was charged with was to point to Lüzhu, and I do not know which one she is.' Chong said in a heat, 'Lüzhu is the one I love, and she cannot be had.' The messenger said, 'My lord is broad in the old learning and knows the present, and you look to what is far and shed light on what is near. I beg you to think three times over it.' Chong did not think so. The messenger went out and came back again, but in the end Chong would not allow it."
Wang Yin's Jin shu says, "Yue's father, Wende, was Grand Administrator of Langye, and Sun Xiu was a petty clerk who ran errands for him. Yue often kicked and trampled Xiu, and did not treat him as a man."
The Jin yangqiu says, "Ouyang Jian's style was Jianshi, and he was a man of Bohai. He had talent and grace of style, and the men of the time said of him, 'Bohai shines and shines: Ouyang Jianshi.' At first Jian was Grand Administrator of Fengyi. Lun, the Prince of Zhao, was General Who Conquers the West, and Sun Xiu was his belly and heart, and they threw Guanzhong into disorder. Jian was always setting things straight, and from this there was a rift." Wang Yin's Jin shu says, "Shi Chong and Pan Yue were friends with Jia Mi and on good terms with him, and when Mi was cast down they feared they would come to danger in the end, and they plotted with the Prince of Huainan to put Lun to death. The matter leaked out, and they seized Chong and his kin of the year's mourning and above, and beheaded them all. At first Yue's mother had warned Yue with the way of stopping and being content, and when he was seized he parted from his mother, saying, 'I have failed you, mother.' Chong's house was north of the river, and those who came to seize him arrived. He said, 'It will be no more than banishment to Jiaozhou and Guangzhou for me.' When he had been put in the cart and had come to the eastern marketplace, he sighed for the first time and said, 'The slaves had an eye to the wealth of my house.' The man who seized Chong said, 'If you knew that wealth was a harm, why did you not scatter it early?' Chong could not answer."
The Yulin says, "Pan and Shi were punished together in the eastern marketplace. Shi said to Pan, 'All under heaven is killing its heroes. What have you done, then?' Pan said, 'When men of excellence fill the ditches and gullies, the waves that are left reach other men.'"
2Young men, how is it that you go so lightly to stay the night at another man's house?
Liu Yu and his brother were hated by Wang Kai when they were young.
Kai once called the two of them to stay the night, meaning to do away with them without a word.
He had a pit dug, and when the pit was finished he was on the point of doing them harm.
Shi Chong had always been on good terms with Yu and Kun. When he heard that they had gone to stay at Kai's, he knew there was bound to be some turn, so he went to Kai by night and asked where the two Lius were.
Kai was pressed so suddenly that he could not conceal it, and answered, "They are sleeping in the back study."
Chong went straight in, drew them out himself, and went off with them in one carriage.
He said, "Young men, how is it that you go so lightly to stay the night at another man's house?"

3Wuji cried out in shock and drew his blade and went out
Wang the Grand General seized Prince Min of the Sima house. At night he sent Shizhuang, who put the prince in a carriage and killed him, and at the time not everyone knew of it.
Even in Prince Min's own household they did not all know of it, and Wuji and his brothers were all young.
Wang Huzhi and Wuji grew up very close to each other.
Huzhi once came to go about with him, and Wuji went in to tell his mother and asked her to have food made.
His mother let her tears fall and said, "Wang Dun long ago gave free rein to his cruelty against your father, and he borrowed the hand of Shizhuang for it. The reason I have not told you these many years is that the Wang house is strong and you brothers were still young, and I did not want this to be noised abroad. It was only to keep disaster away."
Wuji cried out in shock and drew his blade and went out, but Huzhi had already gone far.

The Jin yangqiu says, "Sima Cheng's style was Yuanjing, and he was the son of Sun, the Prince of Qiao. He was made Inspector of Xiangzhou under Zhongzong, and on his way he passed through Wuchang. Wang Dun held a feast with him, and when the wine was at its height he said to Cheng, 'Your Highness is an honest and solid gentleman, but you have not the talent to command as a general.' Cheng answered, 'How do you know that a lead knife cannot cut once?' When Dun was about to plot rebellion he called Cheng to be his Marshal of the Army, and Cheng sighed and said, 'I shall surely die of this. The land is waste and the people scattered, my position is alone and help is cut off. To go to one's lord in his trouble is loyalty, and to die in the king's service is right. To die for loyalty and for right, what more is there to seek?' Then he sent a call to arms in haste to all the commanderies, and Cheng went out for the right. Dun sent Wei Yi, his cousin on his mother's side, to attack Cheng, and Wang Yi had brigands meet him, and he died in his carriage. When Dun had been destroyed, Cheng was given the rank of General of Agile Cavalry, and his posthumous name was Prince Min."
The Wuji biezhuan says, "Wuji's style was Gongshou, and he was the son of Cheng. His talent and his capacity both served to carry things through, and he had ability in letters and in arms. He succeeded to the fief of Prince of Qiao, and he was General of the Guards."
The Sima shi pu says, "Cheng married a daughter of the Zhao house of Nanyang." The Wang Yi biezhuan says, "Yi's style was Shizhuang. His grandfather was Lan and his father was Zheng. Yi was lofty and clear, open and free. Wang Dao and Yu Liang were out at Shitou, and Yi happened to come. That day there was a swift wind and the sails were flying, and Yi leaned on the boat's upper deck and gave a long whistle, and his spirit and his air were most free. Dao said to Liang, 'Shizhuang knows what is what after all.' Liang said, 'It is just enough to let his freedom out, that is all.' He was haughty by nature, and those who did not suit him he turned away to their faces, and so he came to be hated by others. He was given the further title of General Who Pacifies the South, and he died."
4Xiuzai ran and threw himself into the water, and men on a small boat took hold of him and pulled him out, and so he escaped
When Ying, the General Who Guards the South, was made Inspector of Jingzhou, Wang Xiuzai and Wuji, the son of the Prince of Qiao, both came to Xinting to take their leave of him.
There were a great many guests in the party, and no one noticed that the two men had both come.
One guest said, "That Cheng, the Prince of Qiao, met his end was not the Grand General's wish. It was the work of the General Who Pacifies the South, and nothing more."
At this Wuji snatched the sword of the Adjutant on Guard Duty and was about to cut him down.
Xiuzai ran and threw himself into the water, and men on a small boat took hold of him and pulled him out, and so he escaped.

Wang Yin's Jin shu says, "Ying Zhan's style was Siyuan, and he was a man of Nandun in Runan, a great-grandson of Qu. He was broad and far-reaching as a man and had a deep capacity, and he set it off with a talent for letters. He Chong, Minister over the Masses, sighed and said, 'This is what is called a man of pattern and substance.' He rose through several offices to Inspector of Jiangzhou and General Who Guards the South."
The Zhongxing shu says, "When Chu Pou was made Inspector of Jiangzhou, Wuji drew a sword where they sat and was about to cut down Qizhi, and Pou and Huan Jing together saved him. A Censor reported that Wuji had meant to kill on his own authority, and by edict it was settled with a fine in redemption." The earlier passage already says that Wuji's mother told him of it, and this passage says again that a guest set the matter out. Moreover, that Wang Yi harmed Sima Cheng was known to all, far and near, so how could Xiuling and his brothers have failed to know? The words of Sun Sheng are all a true record.
5The Right Army pleaded illness and left the commandery, and came to his end in anger and bitter feeling
Wang of the Right Army had always thought little of Wang of Lantian. When in Lantian's later years the praise given him grew steadily weightier, the Right Army was the more displeased.
Lantian suffered a death in the family while at Kuaiji, and he stayed at Shanyin to keep the mourning.
The Right Army took his place over the commandery, and he often said he would go out and offer condolence, but day after day it came to nothing.
Later he came to the gate and had himself announced, and when the host had finished his wailing he went away without going in, and so he slighted him and put him to shame.
From this the dislike and the rift on both sides were greatly knotted together.
Later Lantian was appointed over Yangzhou while the Right Army was still in his commandery. When he first had the news he sent an Adjutant to the court to ask that Kuaiji be divided off and made into Yuezhou.
The man he sent took his charge but lost the sense of it, and became a great laughingstock among the worthies of the day.
Lantian quietly had his attendant officers reckon up all the unlawful things in that commandery, and since there had been a rift before, he let them do as they saw fit.
The Right Army then pleaded illness and left the commandery, and came to his end in anger and bitter feeling.

The Zhongxing shu says, "Xizhi and Shu were not the same in what they aimed at and honored, and neither could abide the other. When Shu was at Kuaiji he was living within the commandery in mourning, and Xizhi, who came after him over the commandery, only sent word of comfort and from the first did not call a second time, and Shu resented it deeply. When his mourning was put off he was summoned and appointed over Yangzhou. He went to take up the summons and made a round of the whole commandery, but he did not pass by Xizhi, and when he was about to set out he took his leave once and went. Xizhi had said at first to his friends, 'When Wang Huaizu comes out of mourning he may just do for a Minister, and in his old age he might make a Vice Director, but to look for Kuaiji besides is of itself far out of reach.' Shu, having been openly appointed, also looked into the commandery of Kuaiji and sought out its gains and its losses, and those in charge were worn out with answering the reckoning. Xizhi was ashamed and bitter, and at last pleaded illness and left the commandery, and before his family graves he swore that he would never serve again. The court, since his oath was a hard one, did not summon him again."
6The only question is how each came through to the end

The Han shu says, "Empress Lü wished to make kings of the various Lü, and she asked the Minister of the Right, Wang Ling, who held that it could not be done. She asked the Left Chancellor, Chen Ping, and Ping said, 'It can be done.' Ling came out and reproached Ping, and Ping said, 'In breaking a man to his face and contending in open court, your servant is not the equal of you. In keeping the altars of the land whole and settling the house of Liu, you are not the equal of your servant.'" The Jin Andi ji says, "At first, when Wang Gong went to the imperial tomb, he meant to behead Guobao. Wang Xun argued firmly against it, and he stopped. Presently Gong said to Xun, 'Looking at you this day, you are just like Hu Guang.' Xun said, 'Wang Ling contended in open court and Chen Ping went along in silence. The only question is how each came through to the end.'"
7What was your reason for being in such haste to kill me?

The Xu Jin yangqiu says, "Wang Gong was in deep fear of disaster and trouble, and he sent up a memorial and raised troops. Then Xie Yan, the General of the Left, was sent to put Gong down, and Gong was beaten and fled to Qu'e, where he was taken by the Commandant of Hupu. At first Daozi had been on good terms with Gong, and he wished to carry him out to the capital and confront him and reckon with him face to face. When he heard that the western army was pressing on, he had him beheaded at Ertang, and his head hung on the Eastern Bridge."
