The Man of Yuzhou
1The Man of the Five Waters
They are the descendants of Linjun (廩君). The affairs of Panhu and of Linjun are both set out in full in the earlier histories. In Xiyang there are the Ba river, the Qi river, the Xi river, the Chiting river and the Xigui river, and they are called the Man of the Five Waters (五水蠻). The places where they live are all deep and rugged. Their clans and settlements are many and strong, and age after age they have been bandits. To the north they touch the Huai and the Ru, to the south they reach the Jiang and the Han, and their land is some thousands of li across.
2The rising of Sima Heishi
In the twenty-eighth year of Yuanjia the Man of Xiyang killed Liu Tai, the magistrate of Nanchuan, and his household with him. In the twenty-ninth year more than two thousand of the Man of Xincai broke the garrison of Dalei and plundered the boats of the government and of private men, and they drew them all into the lake. There was a fugitive named Sima Heishi living among the Man, and he joined them in their raiding. Taizu sent Shen Qingzhi, commandant of the foot soldiers of the heir apparent, to lead the troops of Jiangzhou, Jingzhou, Yongzhou and Yuzhou and strike them. In the fourth year of Daming under Shizu, Qingzhi was sent again to strike the Man of Xiyang, and he won a great victory and took captives and came back. Sima Heishi had three men in his party. One was named Zhi, and Heishi called him "Taigong" and made him his chief counsellor. One was named Anyang, and was called the prince of Qiao. One was named Xuzhi, and was called the prince of Liang. Wen Xiaoluo and other Man attacked Xuzhi and caught him, but Shicai of the Man took him from them, and Xiaoluo and the rest led one another against Shicai and cut down him and his sons, six men. Wang Xuanmo, the inspector of Yuzhou, sent Guo Yuanfeng, general of the palace guard, to comfort the Man and to have them bind the fugitives and send them in. The Man then seized the two men Zhi and Anyang and sent them to Xuanmo, and Shizu had them beheaded at Shouyang.

In "Wen Xiaoluo and other Man attacked Xuzhi and caught him," the name Wen Xiaoluo reads Wen Shanluo in the Nan shi.
In "the Man then seized the two men Zhi, Heishi and Anyang and sent them to Xuanmo" — the words 'the two men Zhi, Heishi, Anyang' read 'the two men Zhi and Anyang' in the Nan shi, and the Nan shi seems the text to follow. Above it says that Sima Heishi had three men in his party, one named Zhi, one named Anyang and one named Xuzhi. Since it speaks of two men here, the Nan shi reading 'the two men Zhi and Anyang' is right. By the text of the Song shu there would be three men, not two. Further, Sima Heishi was at that time their master, and a history would not set the name of Heishi after the name of Zhi. So the two graphs for Heishi seem to be an interpolation.
3The Man who rose in the loyal cause
When Taizong first ascended the throne, there were rebellions on every side. After the southern rebels were beaten at Quewei, Tian Yizhi (益之), a second Tian Yizhi of the same sound (義之), Cheng Yecai and Tian Guangxing of the Man of Xiyang rose in the loyal cause and attacked Yingzhou and took it. The first Yizhi was made general who upholds the state, with command over the military affairs of the Four Mountains. Out of Man households the two commanderies of Song'an and Guangcheng were set up, and the second Yizhi was made grand administrator of Song'an and Guangxing general of the Soaring Dragon and grand administrator of Guangcheng. The first Yizhi was enfeoffed as king of Biancheng county with an estate of four hundred and eleven households, and Cheng Yecai as king of Yangcheng county with an estate of three thousand households. The first Yizhi was called to the capital as general of the tiger guards, and he kept his rank of general as before. At the beginning of Shengming under Emperor Shun he was moved again, to commandant of the archers and General of the Crowning Army. When Cheng Yecai died, his son Posi succeeded to the title and became general who upholds the state and mounted attendant in ordinary. Mei Shisheng of the Man of Jinxi also rose in the loyal cause. He cut down Yan Zhanzhi, the grand administrator of Jinxi, and Shen Guangzu, the secretary of Zixun, the prince of Jin'an. He was enfeoffed as marquis of Gaoshan, with an estate of the thirty households of the two villages of Niugang and Xiachai, which he had led.
Interlinear notes 3
In "when Taizong first ascended the throne," Taizong reads Shizong in every edition. The Song had no Shizong, and the Nan shi has Emperor Ming, so the Song shu ought to say Taizong, and it has now been put right.
In "with command over the military affairs of the Four Mountains (都統四山軍事)," the graph shi (事) reads ren (人) in every edition, and it has been corrected from the Nan shi.
In "he cut down Yan Zhanzhi, the grand administrator of Jinxi, and Shen Guangzu, the secretary of Zixun, the prince of Jin'an," the name Shen Guangzu reads Shen Guangmingzu in every edition. The Song shu kaolun of Sun Bin says, "The chapter of the author's own preface shows Shen Guangzu, the secretary of Zixun, the prince of Jin'an, so the graph ming (明) here is an interpolation."
