Unknown (ascribed to Tan Daoji) · Compiled around the end of the Ming and the beginning of the Qing · China · 7 groups · 725 Chinese characters

The thirty-six stratagems of the saying, “Of the thirty-six stratagems, running away is the best.” From deceiving the heavens to cross the sea down to running away as the best plan, every stratagem is framed on a line text of the Book of Changes and then given a note of comment that sets a real battle beside it. It is the other pillar of the art of war, read side by side with Sunzi Bingfa, The Art of War.

7 entries (a general discussion and 6 divisions) and 37 paragraphs fully translated. The 37 items of the compiler's remarks are given as notes. A companion piece that joins up with readers of Sunzi's Art of War.
