Queen Jindeok.

When Queen Jindeok, the twenty-eighth ruler, ascended the throne, she herself composed the Song of Great Peace (太平歌), had it woven into silk as a pattern, and sent an envoy to Tang to present it.

〔One book says that she ordered Lord Chunchu to go as envoy and ask for troops, and that Taizong approved and granted Su Dingfang, and so on. This is all wrong. Before Xianqing, Chunchu had already ascended the throne. The gyeongsin year of Xianqing was not the time of Taizong but of Gaozong, and Su Dingfang came in the gyeongsin year of Xianqing. So it is clear that the weaving of the pattern into silk was not at the time troops were requested, and it is right to place it in the reign of Jindeok. It was probably the time when she asked for the release of Gim Heumsun.〕

The Tang emperor thought it fine, gave a reward, and changed her investiture to King of the State of Gyerim.

The words of the song are these.

Great Tang opens its vast enterprise; lofty, the emperor's plans flourish. Spears are stilled and martial might is settled; letters are cultivated, matching all the kings. Ruling under Heaven, it honors the rain that falls; ordering all things, its body holds the light. Deep humanity accords with sun and moon; guiding fate, it surpasses Yu and Tang. How the banners blaze! How the gongs and drums resound! Outer barbarians who defy the command are cut down and overturned, bearing Heaven's wrath. Pure winds gather even in hidden places; far and near vie to offer good omens. The four seasons are even as a jade candle; the seven lights circle each in its place. The mountains send down ministers to aid; the emperor entrusts the loyal and good. The Five and the Three make one virtue, shining upon our emperor of the house of Tang.

2Seizing the tiger's tail and dashing it to the ground

In this queen's reign, Lord Alcheon, Lord Imjong, Lord Suljong, Lord Horim〔The father of Jajang.〕, Lord Yeomjang, and Lord Yusin gathered at Uji Rock on Namsan to discuss the affairs of state.

Then a great tiger rushed in among the seats, and the lords started up in alarm.

But Lord Alcheon did not move in the least. He went on talking and laughing calmly, then seized the tiger's tail, dashed it to the ground, and killed it.

Such was the strength of Lord Alcheon, and he sat at the head of the company, yet all the lords bowed before the authority of Yusin.

Silla had four sacred places. When a great matter was to be discussed, the chief ministers would always gather at one of these places to plan it, and then the matter was sure to succeed.

The first, in the east, is Mount Cheongsong; the second, in the south, is Mount Uji; the third, in the west, is Pijeon; the fourth, in the north, is Mount Geumgang.

In this queen's reign the New Year's Day rite was first held, and the title of sirang was first used.
