Samguk Yusa (Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms) Marvels, Part Two A collection of tales of the Three Kingdoms period, compiled by Iryeon, a monk of Goryeo. He gathered the stories the official histories had cast aside. It is the oldest book that carries the myth of Dangun.

1I Will Make Your Daughter My Queen

Great King Sinmu, Yeomjang, and Gungpa.

Before he came to the throne, the forty-fifth king, Great King Sinmu, said to the swordsman Gungpa (弓巴):

"I have an enemy I cannot live with under the same sky. If you can remove him for me and I win the great seat, I will take your daughter and make her my queen."

Gungpa agreed. They joined hearts and strength, raised troops, attacked the capital, and carried the matter through.

After he had taken the throne, the king wished to make Gungpa's daughter his queen, but the ministers pleaded hard against it.

"Gungpa is of low birth. It is not right for Your Majesty to make his daughter queen."

The king followed their words.

At that time Gungpa was guarding the garrison at Cheonghaejin. He resented the king for breaking his word and planned to raise a revolt.

General Yeomjang heard of it and reported, "Gungpa is about to commit disloyalty. Your servant asks leave to remove him."

The king was glad and gave permission.

2He Took Gungpa's Own Sword and Cut Him Down

Yeomjang received the order and went to Cheonghaejin. Through the man who received visitors he sent word:

"I have a small grievance against the king. I wish to throw myself upon Your Excellency and keep my life whole."

Gungpa heard it and said in great anger, "You people pleaded with the king and turned away my daughter. With what face do you come to see me?"

Yeomjang sent word again. "That was what all the officials pleaded. I took no part in the plan. Your Excellency has nothing to fear from me."

Gungpa heard this and had him brought into the hall. He said, "For what business have you come here?"

Yeomjang said, "I have offended the king. I only wish to throw myself under your banner and escape harm."

Gungpa said, "That is a happy thing," set out wine, and was greatly pleased.

Yeomjang took Gungpa's long sword and cut him down.

The soldiers under his command were shocked and frightened, and all fell flat on the ground.

Yeomjang led them to the capital and reported that the order was done. "Gungpa is already beheaded."

The king was glad, rewarded him, and gave him the rank of agan.
