A Poor Daughter Supports Her Mother
1The Husk Gruel of Old Days Sat Easy on the Heart
A poor daughter supports her mother.
When Hyojongnang (孝宗郎) was enjoying himself at Poseokjeong on Namsan,〔It is also called Samhwasul.〕 his retainers came racing like shooting stars, but two of them alone were late.
Hyojongnang asked why, and they said:
"In the village east of Bunhwangsa there is a woman of about twenty, holding her blind mother in her arms, and the two were crying out to each other and weeping.
We asked a person of the same village, and this is what he said:
'This woman's house is poor, and for years she has begged food to feed her mother in return.
Just now there is a famine, and it has become hard even to lean on a gate and hold out a hand, so she sold herself to another house for thirty seok of grain, left it in the master's keeping, and worked there.
At dusk she would wrap up rice, come home, cook for her mother, and sleep beside her, and at dawn go back to work at the master's house. This went on for several days.
Her mother said, "The husk gruel of old days sat easy and peaceful on my heart, but the fragrant rice of these days pierces me to the liver, and my heart is not at ease. Why is that?"
The woman told her the truth, and her mother wept aloud.
The woman lamented that she had only fed her mother's mouth and belly and had failed in keeping a gentle face. That is why they hold each other and weep.'
We were late only because we stopped to see this."
