Samguk Yusa (Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms) Pagodas and Images, Part Four A collection of tales of the Three Kingdoms period, compiled by Iryeon, a monk of Goryeo. He gathered the stories the official histories had cast aside. It is the oldest book that carries the myth of Dangun.

1After seven days of prayer, a son returns from the sea

A poor woman of Ugeum-ri (禺金里) named Bogae (寶開) had a son named Jangchun (長春).

He went off with sea merchants, and for a long time there was no news of him.

His mother went to Minjangsa (敏藏寺)〔this temple was made when the gakgan Minjang gave up his house to be a temple〕 and prayed earnestly for seven days before the image of Avalokitesvara, and Jangchun suddenly arrived.

When asked what had happened, he said this:

"In the middle of the sea the wind drove us and the ship broke apart, and none of my companions escaped. I rode a single plank and came ashore on the coast of Wu. The people of Wu took me in and made me plow the fields.

A strange monk came, as if from my home village, and comforted me kindly, and then took me along with him on the road. There was a deep ditch ahead, and the monk tucked me under his arm and leaped across.

In a daze I seemed to hear the sounds of my home speech and the sound of weeping, and when I looked, I had already arrived here.

I left Wu toward sunset and reached here when it was barely the first hour of the evening."

This was on the eighth day of the fourth month of the fourth year of Tianbao (天寶), the eulyu year.

King Gyeongdeok heard of it, donated fields to the temple, and also offered goods and silk.
