Wang Ocheonchukguk Jeon (Memoir of the Pilgrimage to the Five Regions of India) Complete in one volume The travel record of Hyecho, a monk of Silla, who at about twenty walked forty countries of India and the Western Regions and set down what he saw. It was lost for more than a thousand years and was found again in 1908 in the caves of Dunhuang, as a damaged scroll. Five poems in five-word lines, longing for home, are carried in it.

1No one is drunk

Then from this country of Sata I went west for a month and reached the country of Sindugora The dress, the customs and the cold and warmth of the seasons are like North India, but the speech is a little different. This country has camels in great plenty, and the people of the country take milk and curds from them and eat.

The king and the people revere the Three Jewels greatly, and there are many monasteries and many monks. The treatise master Sanghabhadra (眾賢), who made the Shun zhengli lun (順正理論), was a man of this country. In this country both the Great Vehicle and the Lesser Vehicle are practised.

Now it has been invaded by the Arabs, and half the country is laid waste.

From this country on, as far as the five Indias, they do not drink much wine. Though I went through all five Indias, I never saw a drunken man striking another. Even those who drink get colour and strength from it, no more. I saw no one singing or dancing or making plays or holding drinking feasts.
