Wang Ocheonchukguk Jeon (Memoir of the Pilgrimage to the Five Regions of India) Complete in one volume The travel record of Hyecho, a monk of Silla, who at about twenty walked forty countries of India and the Western Regions and set down what he saw. It was lost for more than a thousand years and was found again in 1908 in the caves of Dunhuang, as a damaged scroll. Five poems in five-word lines, longing for home, are carried in it.

1A country with more monks than laymen

Again from this country of Gandhara I went straight north into the mountains for three days and reached the country of Ojang (烏長國). They call themselves Uljiinna (欝地引那).

This king reveres the Three Jewels greatly. He gives the greater part of his people and villages to the monasteries for their offerings, and keeps only a small part to provide his own clothing and food, and holding assemblies and making offerings is his practice every day. There are many monasteries and many monks, so that the monks are somewhat more than the laymen. Only the Law of the Great Vehicle is practised.

The dress, the food and the manners are like those of the country of Gandhara, but the speech is not the same. The land has camels, mules, sheep, horses and wool cloth in plenty. The seasons are very cold.
