Wang Ocheonchukguk Jeon (Memoir of the Pilgrimage to the Five Regions of India) Complete in one volume The travel record of Hyecho, a monk of Silla, who at about twenty walked forty countries of India and the Western Regions and set down what he saw. It was lost for more than a thousand years and was found again in 1908 in the caves of Dunhuang, as a damaged scroll. Five poems in five-word lines, longing for home, are carried in it.

1The customs of the six Hu countries

Again, east of the country of the Arabs all are countries of the Hu (胡), that is, the country of An (安國), the country of Jo (曹國), the country of Sa (史國), the country of Seokra (石騾國), the country of Mi (米國), the country of Gang (康國) and the rest. Each has its own king, but all are under the rule of the Arabs. The countries are narrow and small, their troops are not many, and they cannot defend themselves.

The land yields camels, mules, sheep, horses, wool cloth and the like. They wear wool shirts, trousers and the like, and leather coats. Their speech is not like that of the other countries.

Again, these six countries all worship fire (火祆) and do not know the Law of the Buddha. Only in the country of Gang is there one monastery and one monk, and even he does not know how to revere it.

These countries of the Hu all cut their beards and hair, and they love to wear white wool caps. Their customs are very bad. They marry in confusion, taking a mother or a sister to wife. The country of Persia too takes a mother to wife.

In the countries of Tokhara, Gyebin, Bamiyan, Sayul and the rest, brothers, ten or five or three or two, take one wife together. They do not allow each man to take a wife of his own, for they fear that the household would be ruined.
