Da Tang Xiyu Ji (Great Tang Records on the Western Regions) Book 1 The record Xuanzang laid before Emperor Taizong of the Tang after seventeen years of walking through the Western Regions and India, a hundred and thirty-eight countries in all. It is the stuff from which Journey to the West was made, but what stands here is not monsters — it is the compass and the climate and the speech and the faith of one country after another. The road runs two hundred years after Faxian and eighty years before Hyecho.

呾蜜國。東西六百餘里。南北四百餘里。國大都城周二十餘里。東西長南北狹。伽藍十餘所。僧徒千餘人。諸窣堵波卽舊所謂浮圖也。又曰鍮婆又曰塔婆。又曰私鍮簸。又曰藪斗波。皆訛也。及佛尊像多神異有靈鑒。

The country of Danmi is more than six hundred li from east to west and more than four hundred li from north to south. The great capital city of the country is more than twenty li around, long from east to west and narrow from north to south. There are more than ten monasteries and more than a thousand monks. The many sudubo are what were called futu in older days. They are also called toupo, also tapo, also situbo, also soudoubo, but all of these are wrong. Among the honored images of the Buddha too there are many wonders, and they answer with spirit.
